I don't get the whole giant croc thing. It was alive? Dead? Living statue? It "ate" Captain Hook by landing it's open petrified jaws on the ground around him?

I know this movie was pre-Jurassic Park, but sheesh.

It's obviously supposed to have a kind of magical/mystical element to it. It's "dead" and propped up in this like petrified taxidermied kind of state, but it's like its spirit comes back to get Hook through it at the end, in this kind of "back from the great beyond to get him" way. I never really thought twice about this even as a kid, I thought it made perfect sense what they were going for.

This is a lot better in my opinion than if they did some crazy Jumanji special effects animal fight sequence shit. The idea of the croc having driven Hook half crazy with fear, being dead and propped up in this statue kinda thing, and still ultimately getting him in the end in this kind of "can't escape his fate" way, was a lot more interesting than if some goofy CGi crocodile was going berserk.

After Rufio dies, Jack's kids plead for him to take them home, and Jack actually agrees. They just walk away from Rufio's body. Its incredible. Only Hook's persistent threats get Jack to fight him.

Honestly, Rufio shouldn't have died. He dies a pointless death trying to prove himself to Hook. He doesn't save anyone, he just gets killed. There's no magic, there's no fun, he's just gone. They should have re-wrote where Rufio is mortally injured and the only way to save him is to take him home, he'll have to grow up. And Hook won't let them leave. He promises he'll come for his kids again and again and Peter Pan is compelled to fight Hook to stop his madness.
