It's irony that went over the heads of the majority of the audience.
At the climax of the movie, the nazis are watching a clearly fictionalised version of history, where one pudgy sniper supposedly takes out hundreds and hundreds of allies over the course of days. Right, no one ever thought of taking out his tower with artillery? He never once slept or lost focus? It's obvious propaganda. And look how the nazis watching the film react. They're laughing and clapping.
Then the French chick shows up on screen and sets them all on fire, and the basterds burst out and start gunning everyone down. And how did audiences react irl to this scene? There was confusion. Huh? What? Oh, I guess Hitler's dead now? That's the climax, Quentin?
The point he was making is that HE made an obvious propaganda film. If we, the modern audience, were like nazis, WE would have been laughing and clapping at this obviously fictional portrayal of Hitler's defeat. Instead, we were confused. This shows we are less evil than the Germans were in WWII.

Tarantino is a good writer that likes to play with audience expectations and suspense. As this kind of filmmaker Tarantino also considers the preconcieved notions of the audience when crafting his work. So understanding that in 2007 the general audience goes into the movie thinking “Nazi Bad”, he makes the Nazi say something honorable— forcing the audience to respect him— right before he gets beaten to death, because that turns a scene of lowbrow exploitation violence into something more latered and suspenseful. Similarly, Hans Landa and the SS officer in the bar scene are charming and the smartest person in the room, this makes you subconciously root for them which plays with your emotions and feeling of suspense. In the same bar scene he makes you fell bad for the German soldier who just became a father, that gets coldly murdered after giving up his weapon. This sort of thing is a general strategy when it comes to Tarantino’s writing. You freaks are reading way too much into this because you are somehow not on the intellectual level of Tarantino despite him being an entry level filmmaker.

It's a deconstruction of heroic violence in media that flies over most people's heads. There's an underlying sadism thats inherent to those perpetrate violence even to those it's justified to use violence against in society. For the Nazis the Jews were an ultimate satanic evil and they're not even human anymore, for Americans the Nazis were an ultimate satanic evil who aren't even human anymore etc. The reality is obviously much more complex, not everyone in Germany even fighting for the Nazi government was a monster and not everyone on the side of the Americans was a saint. The moral justification of violence comes from a framework of dehumanization , and glorifying the deed of violence against a perceived evil. Every single atrocity committed by mankind is justified through that framework of dehumanizing the enemy and glorifying the deed.

That's why Inglorious Bastards is a move about psychopathic Americans killing sometimes noble or unwilling Germans indiscriminately from high ranking SS officer who murdered civilians for fun. It's all the same evil on different sides.
