Dexter kills people for the sheer thrill of it and due to a narcissistic need to feel superior to those around him while justifying it through a set of ethics he consistently violates while convincing himself he never had any hope for a making a different choice. He denies that he has emotions or attachments out of necessity and habit, he's in reality not so divorced from empathy that he is genuinely incapable of love he just lacks enough empathy to hurt people he isn't particularly close with to any degree he feels necessary. He kills innocent people the whole show "for survival" or even just for personal revenge.
Dexter is 100% an evil character struggling to find some kind of morality in his actions and someone afraid of confronting the underlying issues of his psychology. Literally every person in his life feeds his sadism and even goes as far as teaching or encouraging him to kill people, he is a brainwashed nutcase who kills for excitement. Hopefully this season they can actually confront the fact that he's not a true psychopath, that he is in fact a victim of pretty awful child abuse fork a series of horrible role models and maybe faces justice for what he's done.
