Watched The Voyage Home. Amazing how it uses our bond with the actors (who are really cantankerous old silent genners) to make the contemporeanous world look unfamiliar and retarded. Weird how Sulu was able to fly a chopper though. I would expect a 20th century chopper pilot to be able to pilot the Enterprise but not the other way around, sort of like how automaticfags can't into a gearstick. I loved how Scotty was the god of engineering to 20th century morons and Bones was curing people in the hospital like jesus but Sulu would have crashed that chopper in about 2 minutes flat after he realised there wasn't a touch screen that he could tap to make the chopper fly itself. Funny how Kirk just willingly brought that lady into the future when Picard was so assblasted about the concept of 20th century humans being unfrozen.

The Kirk as Moby Dick metaphor renders him as a quasi-villain who has to mercilessly wreck Khan’s shit at every encounter. The filmmakers really pulled the dynamic off well, that Kirk is still the character you root for even though he’s not the underdog. That scene where Khan is gloating on the viewscreen and Kirk just calmly and assuredly gives orders for Khan’s shields to be remotely turned off because he’s a 20th century caveman who doesn’t know you can do that is amazing. Of course there is a lot of development for Kirk with him accepting he’s now an oldfag but the story of the movie is essentially Khan being so mad he runs into a brick wall over and over until he dies, despite everyone telling him to stop.

It's actually kind of an interesting what if situation - the Captain Sulu thing was originally meant to be in Wrath of Khan, and it makes sense when you look at the situation in that movie - Kirk has returned to being an Admiral, Spock is Captain of the Enterprise, Chekov has taken the post of XO on the Reliant, Scotty has the rank of Captain, etc. Everyone had gone their separate ways and the training cruise was a temporary reunion.
There's a deleted scene where Kirk congratulated him on his promotion to Captain of the Excelsior which would take effect after the got back.

But they deleted mention of it and kept making movies where the cast remained together so it feels like everybody is static, despite it ending up a situation where Enterprise's entire senior staff are Captains or Commanders. Undiscovered Country just finally brought the idea back.

I remember Takei saying there was plans for him to become Captain of the Excelsior back on Star Trek 4, and he blames Shatner for being completely opposed to it and having the power to make it not happen.
