there's something incredibly deep and telling about American political attitudes in these scenes.

The book that Will callously disregards, the "fake" history book, is Vickers' Farmers and Fishermen: Two Centuries of Work in Essex County. Its title sounds stodgy and conservative as hell, right.

But Vickers is about poor, working class fishermen and their struggles to adapt to a free market economy upon leaving their semi-indentured servitude, unpaid labor on their father's family farm.

It was a book that represented a rejection of boring old hagiographies of dead white elite men like Ben Franklin and the founding fathers. It was an attempt by historians who experienced the revolutions of the 1960s to depart from classic Great Men history and shed light on the common masses, the working man.

American elite intellectuals like Vickers grew up thinking they were establishing a new era of liberal scholarship that would be embraced by the youth for its anti-elitism.
Instead found themselves totally outpaced. The current had swept by so fast that anything slightly positive about American history was now on the side of the orthodoxy, the boring old men.

Filtered by the section on soil properties and their relation to the distribution of land plots in the Northern and Southern colonies... humor aside, his style of writing is very dry but I found his historical assessment of the formative factors behind the US to be incredibly fascinating. You'd never expect something as banal as inheritance law or soil quality to be so important but it really is.

Yarvin is a bright guy and I think he's directionally right on the limits of democracy but he has a tendency to over justify his ideas by citing historical episodes in a very honestly biased and self serving way. Most people have no clue when it comes to the hundreds of historical references he makes so they tend to fail to respond adequately. Yarvin really needs to hone his communication style and make more of a specific and reasoned case for monarchy in public. My two cents.
