I have this theory that Steve Martin is only successful because he kind of looks like Leslie Nielson and people get them confused

I reckon in the 70s he must've been real subversive. It's just we can't recognize it now.
I'm sure he has deserved his place. Gonna go watch some of his early stand up, see if my theory is correct.

Fucking zoomers, he was one of the best stand up acts back in 70s, also he was always dedicated to music, he had several comedy/musical albums and sold out stadium/arena gigs before start doing movies by mid-80s

I agree, his act don't translate well to films, but The Jerk, Planes Trains and Automobiles, L.A. Story, Roxanne, The Spanish Prisoner, Parenthood, The little shop of Horrors are pure Kino. Even shitty ones like Tres Amigos!, Leap of Faith, My Blue Heaven or Bowfinger are better than the regular /tv/ slop/capeshit.

Planes, Trains is a great movie, but Steve was unreasonably negative in the movie, it's pure John Candy kinography but it's sort of dampened by Martin's character being too far to the left of the straight man act.

He's good in Little Shop of Horrors and, though I don't find him very funny in it, he still is good as the lead in Planes, Trains & Automobiles.

He owns a house near me and I met him out walking my dog. It was during covid and he was one of the few not in a mask out walking the lakefront. He asked me if my dog bites, and I said not often and he stopped to pet him. I told him I loved the Jerk, and he said, "Aww... everyone likes that one." and went about his business. Cool guy.

This guy gets it. To be fair to zoomers, you really need to have been born before 1980 to get Steve Martin.

The only one bit where he honestly made me laugh was Little Shop of Horrors and it was mostly because of Bill Murray's 5 minute performance.

>To be fair to zoomers, you really need to have been born before 1980 to get Steve Martin.
Pretty much this. As >>213500014 said, it fits more in the entertainer type of act rather than full comedy. Same happens with people like Gene Wilder , zoomers even have issues to get Mel Brooks.
