I thought the same, it tastes like an old toothpaste brand named Euthymol
I forget the first brand I tried but I gave it another go and got Virgil's and it's a mellower flavour, much nicer than the others when icy cold from the fridge
Goes well with nice cheesy Doritos for watching the latest Amerikino

Real root beer is great. Commercial root beer doesn't taste like real root beer, but it's still drinkable if you survive the sugar shock. Spruce beer is another story. Real aka homemade is delicious, commercial taste like shit.
