Hey, I know what will be fun! Let's have a watchthrough of the first episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks"! You can all chime in with your observations in real time! Won't that simply be marvelous???/? So much better than just spamming "hurr durr star trek sex with shran".

This is a cool episode. Lota combat
this episode reminds me of the Enterprise episode with the transporter inventor. same vibes, and not just because the scientists are both black. they're both like blinded by the belief in their "baby" and put everyone at risk

Oh, look at that nutty Boimler! Hiding in a closet, pretending to record a captain's log! He wants to be a big boy so badly! You man-children can relate, can't you? Think of all the shower arguments you've had! Well, no, you can't—that would imply you shower. But just work with me here, OK? Use your imagination! No, wait, you don't have one of those either. Oh well, moving on.

Oh look, here comes Mariner! And she's drunk on Romulan ale! OMG, she's such a rebel! Can't you, like, just, totally relate? Uh oh, Mariner made an oopsie! She was playing around with big-boy toys, and cut the shit out of Boimler's leg! It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt, right? Then mommy has to put Band-Aids on it, kiss it, and make it all better. Isn't it great how you get to live in mommy's house forever? Not even get a job or anything? And all it costs is your self-respect, but you weren't doing anything with that anyway. Therefore, in summary... ouchie!!!1!

Second Contact? Oh, how clever! See, it's the big-name ships, like the Enterprise, that are tasked with making "first contact". But it's little ships like the Cerritos that are tasked with... oh, I'm giggling so much I'm nearly wetting myself... Second Contact! It's like, y'know, when a woman lets you touch her a second time! Oh, you don't know what that's like? OK, let me try to explain. Sometimes, after you touch a woman, she doesn't slap you then file a lawsuit against you. No, believe it or not, sometimes the woman likes it! And after your first contact with her, she's amenable to a second contact! No slapping or lawsuit or anything! So the job of the Cerritos is like touching a woman for the second time, after Kirk and Riker have already had their way with her. No, that's sloppy seconds. Therefore, everything I just told you is wrong, but you wouldn't know that unless I told you, so no harm done. Moving on.

>>213512400I meant John Henry. Alright — here’s a vivid, folktale-style telling of John Henry, with that big-breakfast detail you were remembering.
The Ballad of John Henry
A long time ago, when steel rails were stretching across the country and mountains still stood in the way of progress, there was a man named John Henry. Folks say he was born with a hammer in his hand, and by the time he was grown, he was the strongest steel driver anyone had ever seen.
John Henry was a Black man, tall as a pine tree, with muscles that looked like they’d been carved from the very rock he worked in. He laid track for the railroads, swinging his mighty hammer to drive steel spikes into the rails.
One morning, word came down the camp:
A company man had brought a brand-new steam-powered drill. “This here machine,” he bragged, “can do the work of ten men. No need for steel drivers anymore.”
Now, John Henry didn’t like the sound of that one bit. He wasn’t afraid of losing his job for himself — he was thinking about all the other working men who needed that job to feed their families.

Isn't this an impressive holodeck? See, in the future, they've gone way past AI image-generation and video-generation, and can make full-blown 3D environments than one can interact with! And there are no contradictions whatsoever in Trek's depiction of this! Like, in the first episode of TNG, Wesley fell into the water, and was sopping wet even after leaving the holodeck. Later, they claimed that all matter in the holodeck isn't real, and so it disappears as soon as you leave. But no, this wasn't a contradiction caused by sloppy writing. And in at least four different colors, even! After this scene, she and Tendi... well, I don't need to tell you what they did. But they sure can't show that on TV, not even on streaming services! Okay, Crusher telling the Trill she's not into their next host isn't as bad as I expected. People made it seem like she was a bigot for not being into a woman but it seems more like she's fucked up by the symbiotic relationship & who calls the shots.
DS9 definitely fleshes the Trill out in a better fashion.
>>213517459I appreciated them more as weird monsters of the week than I did fleshed out. DS9 just sort of glosses over the fact that a federation civ is run by and for the benefit of giant buttslugs. Somehow that’s ok but the cute little guys from season 1 are a nono. It’s weird
>>213517578They kill the host creature that is spawning them and purge the takeover, though. It ends in Conspiracy and it's over for good. Why would DS9 cover a dead and resolved storyline that even TNG never followed up on itself?
>>213517578Just watched Conspiracy today. The bug guys in conspiracy are violent and actively trying to take over the federation. There’s no canon explanation as to who or what they are (originally supposed to be the borg, in DS9 novels their a mutant group of Trills, in STO something else entirely) but they are definitely evil. The trill I see as more cultish not necessarily evil.

But it seems like there's a whole hell of a lot more going on there. Like when Odo and Kurzon linked up in that ritual and it was more like his soul went into Odo. Or when Ezri was able to summon up a tulpa of that one murderer host and carry on conversations with him.

>>213517599>>213517629It’s just the only example that popped into my head. There are mindworms in Wrath of Kahn too. Point is that it seems odd to me that a species like the Trill, which naturally seems like an asymmetric power thing where the joined are dominant over the unjoined is fine by the federation. First and second class citizens, slaves to the buttslugs all. It’s weird
>>213511617can you do your mother and I a favor and kill yourself already so she doesn't have to support your basement dwelling incel ass any longer
What's up with Picard and Indie Dreamcore Redheads?
>>213517774There are those who don’t join in trill society though. I see it more of choice than just bug assimilation. That’s why I said it’s a tad more cultish. The trill aren’t an evil bug race if anything I view it more as the bug wants “immortality” and the carrier wants “immortality”. The trill aren’t definitely not my favorite race and the muddle a lot of the story lines about them, but I can see why the federation doesn’t feel threatened by them.
>>213517727That’s sort of what I mean: like they make a superficial attempt to flesh it out but never really make it clear. My read is that the slugs calls the shots, within the relationships with the joined but also in their society as a whole. That seems a little fucked up and they don’t really talk about it in the show which is a shame because it’s neat, if not weird
>>213517853But the goal is to be joined, it’s what they all aspire to. To have giant mind controlling slugs up their butts. The only Trill we see in Starfleet have slugs up their butts. Their society is structured to maximally benefit mind controlling buttslugs. It’s weird
>>213517913IIRC Ezri's family were all non-joined, and her mom kind of pissy that her daughter was "taken from them" when she got SLUGGED.COM. Seemed like they were a pretty well off family too. Maybe it's like Starship Troopers where you're free to be a successful business owner or whatever you want if you're slugless, but only the joined one have any kind of say so in their politics.

TOS fans come first, but it can be skipped, TNG gets the best spot, followed by DS9 and ENT is in the rear because well even though I love it, I’d wager the majority of trek fans enjoy VOY more.
