Then you gotta figure that most people can't be bothered to leave the house these days. There was a Redbox by my grocery store 15 years ago that didn't even last a year.

I think most turned into restaurants (lots of space in front and private rooms in back makes them easy to convert to seating area and kitchen I guess)
One old mom and pop one used be one of the most popular in a cursed strip mall and nothing besides the hairdresser has survived in the strip since it left. Lots of shit has moved in, but that place has the kind of cursed atmosphere where I think only a hairdresser or VHS rental place would vibe with it and survive a year

Generally you're getting 720p or 1020p on streaming sites, so it could be dvd quality and your connection is slow or it could be the rip itself isn't in a high enough resolution
Some things there will be 480p resolution in case people have slow connections but it's generally mostly phased out

Resolution is just the number of pixels available, but if it's a low-bitrate stream, it'll be heavily compressed and can still look bad.
Even with a blu-ray disc, there are some blu-rays that look relatively muddy and some that look amazing and clear down to the grain, depending on how good a job the company did with scanning the film and encoding it onto the disc.
Even the worst blu-ray looks better than DVD, though, which just doesn't have the canvas available to be able to display things with high detail

Also yes, some nice dark scenes that will probably shit the bed on streaming.

Nobody is copying and pasting these movies. I'm talking about the original files, the terabytes of data they originally shot. The vast majority of digital movies are not going to see any kind of back-up. The only thing that will exist is the blu-ray/4K and the basic streaming copy, and then that's the same as a scanned film file, only the film will still exist to be rescanned in the future for a higher quality format or even played authentically as film reels in a projector.
There is no group dedicated to the preservation of digital slop, and only the biggest Hollywood movies will anyone bother to keep around.
