The whole film is an allegory for paranoia around schools in America. The tragedies that have occurred, and the fear of indoctrination.
The kids are turned into 'weapons' by the witch, but so are the parents due to paranoia.
It literally acts as a big fat symbol right in your face so that anyone who isn't retarded won't miss the blatant subtext.

Alright guys, here's my "better ending"

Thee great-aunt is actually an exorcist who tricks the parents into letting her into their home, because she has sensed that the kid has been summoning demons.

Throughout the story, everyone believes she is the cause of the strange events,
until the very end, when it’s revealed that the child has been dabbling in dangerous occult rituals found online to get back at his classmates for bullying.

When the classmates die, the great-aunt is blamed and the parents kill her. Alex is placed with a new family, and the audience realizes he is going to start the cycle all over again.

In the end, the audience also realizes their own paranoia and suspicion were manipulated just like the parents.
