We've already exhausted this story arc though. Season 4 was the ultimate conclusion of it, the answer is no he can't because the people close to him will suffer the consequences. From that point the story must end (it should have) or go one of two ways, either he leaves killing behind, or he leaves his humanity behind. You can't just keep going back to the well, there is no greater tragedy than his son witnessing his mother being murdered. There is nothing new that fucking Lady Vengeance brings to the formula. Hell Hannah in season 7 was already a retread of Lila. Now we're going back for thirds? The worst part about Dexter is refusing to let his character change because it's more profitable for him to be static. People just want the same old Dexter we know and love.

It's what makes her especially tragic in the 1st season since her stated first time she's felt real love for a guy was for a serial killer who was just really good at faking it and using her to get to her brother. Which was very psychologically fucked up long before the cringe "in love with my brother subplot" in one of the later seasons.

I agree with this and a lot of it is bad writing/the need to milk the franchise. On the other hand, it does paint Dexter as very flawed, whereas in early seasons he was kind of too perfect. A serial killer who only kills bad guys with no downside!

The writing and milking aside, Dexter is an emotionally stunted guy who can't help his need for connection and his need to kill people. It's such a cop out having him cause death but never actually be the one killing innocent people (Deb killing Laguerta, Lila killing Doakes, Trinity killing Rita) I actually liked the Logan killing for that reason. Dexter is an obvious control hungry narcissist but he's also literally an addict who keeps thinking he can have it all. He's been lying and coping to himself for years and it catches up to him time and again. He thinks he's better than the people he killed but as he goes on, the bodies of people who didn't deserve to die pile up. I'm honestly pissed they didn't put Logan on the gravestones in his near death experiences.

I mean the need for blatant cameos aside, were you not tipped off by Doakes telling Dexter he's a good person? Rita definitely started that way but he clearly felt for something for Rita well before her death, around the time Paul got out of jail. She was his first time initiating sex and feeling comfortable with it, if he didn't care about her or the kids he would've just broken it off when Paul became too much of an issue. And you're right, it's not even just that nobody taught how to navigate his stunted emotions, Harry actively fucked him over in that respect by feeding into his impulse in a convoluted manner.
