Brits made great noirs - see The Third Man (shot in Vienna, the location is crucial), Night and the City
French made great noirs - see Quai des orfevres, Bob le flambeur
But only Americans made great westerns - and no, the silly spaghetti cargo cult doesn't hold a candle

Definitely Noir. But I can see how the much simpler stories and the "heroes" (father substitutes, just like modern Marvel superheroes) would appeal to the simpler American audience.

Noir, way cooler. Westerns are cool but the cinematography cant touch the look of noir, plus the stories are more depressing and realistic in noirs. For me, being a NoirChad, its an easy choice. It has to be westerns....only joking its noir.

I think youโ€™re really generalizing westerns here, plenty of John Wayne movies had him playing that fatherly surrogate but there were also lods of revisionist or revisionist adjacent westerns. Something like The Tall T has about the same level of moral ambiguity as any Phillip Marlow flick for instance

Exactly my point. They still make them, they just don't have a clue. Even Kevin Costner doesn't know how to do it. I saw 2 new westerns on the dvd rack just yesterday. That Alec Baldwin Rust movie, and something with Pierce Brosnan. They keep putting more nails in the coffin. Clint Eastwood will be turning over in his grave.

Meanwhile no one can make an actual noir anymore, just a 'neo-noir'. The genre gets to rest in piece.

I don't think either were peak Hollywood, but westerns are superior to noir.

Westerns proclaim, encourage, and recount all of the best traits of society. So it's the one man standing up for what's right because it's right; or the western settlers building their farms/ranches and their communities through honest hard work.

Noir highlights the worst in humans; and unless you're anti-social, they show behavior that is discouraged, not encouraged. So you have people cheating on their spouses and getting punished, or a cheating wife and new boyfriend murdering the husband, and eventually getting caught or otherwise facing the consequences.

I am of the opinion that while noir might attract more viewers due to the titillation value; the western has longevity because it (usually) reflects traits we all wish to see in ourselves.

It is Ford's films that are for plebs. There's an old episode of Rawhide that covers the same material as The Searchers, and is 100% better. His most acclaimed westerns are just geriatric drivel with old geezers like Wayne pretending like they're 35/40 when they're rug-wearing 60 year olds.

Stagecoach is somewhat alright, but the 1960s remake is better.

What about Cheyenne Autumn, his bloated failure? Tries to have both ways, when the man clearly had no sympathy for the Indians and was obviously doing it as the fashionable thing of the time.
