The Fantastic Flop

It was never meant to make a lot of money. It was meant to slow down Superman and it did its job. Sure Superman beat Fantastic Four but the Fantastic Four will be in Avengers 4 and 5 and will get more hyped after that film goes huge. Superman doesn't even have a sequel confirmed yet.

I think they should have tried to make a movie that doesn't include Doom or Galactus since that is played out. I don't think capeshit is dead I just think standalone capeshit is for the most part dead. If your movie doesn't have an ensemble cast of some kind it bombs. Like is Superman was just Superman I bet it would have done worse.

They handle the marketing and distribution, so while 25% is less than the 40 to 60% you get else where it's still a decent amount, and it's from a massive market that you otherwise have no access too.

If your movie is a hit in china that could mean another 50-100million in your pocket for essentially no investment. That's enough to make a struggling franchise into a success. It's been enough to sustain franchises like the monsterverse and fast and the furious.

I pirated this movie. It's ~2 hours of set up for the next 2 avengers movies. Thats it. It exists to set up their son who will be a major part of the next movies. It's not the advertising alone. The studios only get 40-50% at best of the ticket sales, and then on top of that you add in marketing/advertising so for big budget movies 2.5x budget is generally a good rule of thumb.
