Back then it was frowned upon to work in ads like that, it was not nearly as common as it is today. Most actors would not accept doing that so not to hurt their careers. However, there was no internet, so there was no way for American or other audiences to know you were in an ad in Japan, so a lot of actors in the 80s and 90s went there for easy paychecks.
Today people don't care about selling out, every movie star is also the face of some brand, sometimes watches, perfumes, clothing lines, you name it.
