The difference is the masturbatory filmmaking and the commercial slop are 2 separate categories where they used to be the same thing.
And I like that because it means that the slop at least attempts to be entertaining and I can filter out the masturbatory stuff based on who made it, its plot and where it's getting acclaim.
So I can go into Brave New World expecting entertaining shit and basically just relaxing for 2 hours while a parody of the mcu plays. And then I can see that Materialists is by a hack whose last film was overrated as is and know to skip it. And then when Gladiator 2 comes out, I know that, if nothing else, Ridley makes entertaining films.
Compare that to the 50s/60s where the only way to tell kino like Spartacus apart from shit like Fall of the Roman Empire is to actually watch them or wait 20 years for one to fade into obscurity while the other is attached to one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.
