An elf lord marching on Mordor with the ring is what Sauron wanted and expected to happen. That's the whole point of having the hobbits do it.

This dude is literally Tilda Swinton's boytoy

Anyway, I consider myself one of the 10 people on this site who have actually read the book and I think Tolkien basically wrote the LotR from 2 angles:
>first angle was a sort of allegory/fairy tale story of everyday innocent Hobbit fellas going out into the world and growing up to save it
>second angle was an autistic dark ages europe historical text with enormous stakes and an ancient history of super humans that have profound wisdom and power

Frankly a lot of the "plot holes" (whilst not really plot holes because they are explained to an extent in the books) are due to conflict with these two contradictory ideas.
Really, Glorfindel doesn't do more in the quest because then it would prevent the Hobbits from being relevant, which is a non-negotiable theme of LotR.
And furthermore, diegetically the Great Eagles aren't really invested in Middle Earth and aren't supposed to intervene in mortal affairs, but in terms of literary analysis the reason they don't carry the ring to Mt Doom is again because it would invalidate the accomplishments of the little guys.

There isn't any plot hole or conflict, Glorfindel didn't go because even if he's badass it's not like he's fucking doom guy and able to singlehandedly fight his way through mordor killing every single orc, troll, dark sorcerer and whatever else Sauron has up his sleeve to deal with some kind of physical threat which is exactly what Mordor was designed to defend against, and since they're relying on stealth the fact that his fëa glows brighter than a cia nigger would be a hindrance.

>At the Council of Elrond, Glorfindel sat in a position of honour alongside Elrond and Gandalf. He suggested that the One Ring should be either sent to Tom Bombadil or cast into the depths of the Sea, but Gandalf believed that the One would resurface on land after a hundred or thousand years. He was briefly considered to be a member of the Fellowship of the Ring, but was later ruled out: his power would be of no use in a mission of secrecy to Mordor.

Not really.

Dude was a really really powerful warrior, but all the elven lords would still be killed against actual armies. They can't single hand entire thousands of enemies for instance.
No elf is stronger than Sauron, not even close.

Celeborn's main ability is he can see the future, but the problem is it's a Eru hack skill.
He sees the future more than any other elf, but he doesn't get to choose when it happens.
Eru shows him things sometimes and doesn't other times.

Talking power levels in LOTR is gay and stupid though, it's whatever Eru wants to happen.
people say Galadriel could defeat Sauron and yeah there is a 1 in 10k chance she could, because that chance would be Eru letting her do so.

All the elf lords have mortal bodies, they don't survive being stabbed in the heart any more than Sauron in his physical body would survive such a blow.

Elves in LOTR literally don't care about mortal shit. Elrond only cares because he's more or less half human and his daughter has the hots for Aragorn. Galadriel cared more about if she could resist the ring than if she could take it from Frodo (she obviously could have).

The book explicitly say if Glorfindel goes Sauron is going to know something is important with the fellowship and he’ll send everything he has against them. It’s better to run weaker with a low profile than it is to send the best heroes in Middle Earth.

1v1 and they both died. Every elf that fought balrogs died, though Feanor and Fingon fought multiple b-boys. Bear in mind all the balrogs together beat Ungoliant at the point when she was the most powerful being in the universe (after God). Any named First Age Noldor could solo everything lesser than Sauron including Smaug, Shelob and the Bitch King. The reason Glorfindel isn't part of the Fellowship is he'd start trying to murder Legolas and every other elf he met over some perceived slight. Never trust a Noldorigger.

If you have wants, the One will corrupt you. Hobbits were resistant to it because they were CONTENT, they didn't have much in the way of ambition, because they had everything they wanted and didn't worry about having more. And every single being that knew about the quest to destroy the Ring, was one more person for it to fuck with. The story happened the only way it could happen
>but the eagles
Gandalf made it clear they'd just say no to going into Mordor, their arrival at the end was a total shock, and only DID go in once Sauron, and by extension the Nine, were gone.

Fingolfin did in a way. Buddy faced an army and none of them dared stand in his way they were too busy shitting themselves in fear. Of course he then got rocked by Melkor since no matter how powerful no elf could ultimately stand against a divine being.

I'm pretty sure Gandalf only let them because he wanted to use them as bait or distractions. After all, the enemy was looking for a halfling, it would help to add to the confusion if you've got a decoy pair.

Except his fëa glowing so brightly is a contrivance Tolkien invented to explain why someone powerful couldn't go on the journey.
Why does Glorfindel have a bonfire fëa but Gandalf doesn't?
>uhhh because Istari just don't work that way
Why doesn't Legolas have a noticable fëa?
>uhhh because it's not due to Glorfindel being an elf or immortal it's actually because he has the light of the valar in him
Glorfindel would have been immensely useful in an enormous number of situations. Tolkien just had to come up with reasons why super powerful high elves couldn't assist on the quest.

He literally led an elf army to defend Lothlorien and then sack Dol Guldur thus protecting Rohan.

On /tv/ many people may have looked at the words but I don't think they really read it.
For some reason LotR attracts a lot of pretender types who claim they were in 9/11 too. Thus the Balrog wings "debate".

It's not that Middle-earth is too pristine, it's that you need to have the right expertise to contribute to it, which is why the only person that's succeeded in doing so has been Christopher Tolkien. Turning Celebrimbor into a wraith with his mind still intact wasn't an improvement. Turning Isildur into a Nazgul wasn't an improvement. Making Shelob a shapeshifting girlfriend of Sauron wasn't an improvement. Creating another Ring wasn't an improvement. Having Celebrimbor possess someone and to make them a superhuman wasn't an improvement. Making the Eye an eternal batlte between Celebrimbor and Sauron wasn't an improvement. Putting another Balrog in Mordor wasn't an improvement. Those were all terrible ideas that went against what was established and didn't fit the aesthetic or themes of Tolkien's work, which is why it's considered such tone-deaf trash.

>Why does Glorfindel have a bonfire fëa but Gandalf doesn't?
Gandalf doesn't have fëa, he's a Maiar in human form. Fëa are spirits of living beings.
>Why doesn't Legolas have a noticable fëa?
He's a a Sinda, and so never went to Valinor and was not imbued with the Light from that place. He was also relatively young.
>Glorfindel would have been immensely useful in an enormous number of situations.
In direct combat, yes. The mission was for stealth, though.

It's explicitly stated that Tom Bombadil can't stand against an army. It's one of the reasons they decide giving him the ring wouldn't be useful.

That might apply to every other shitty uncreative fantasy setting, but in Lord of the Rings the elves act as mentors to humanity primarily because they see humanity fucking up in the exact same ways that the elves fucked up and are legitimately terrified that the world won't survive another fuckup.

They're trying to sneak in. Sending your balrog-killing super-soldier is a pretty big hint to the enemy that "this group is super important, focus your attention on this group." Glorfindel's powerful but he can't 1v1 an entire army.

Sauron didn't bat an eye at seeing a Hobbit, but if he saw Glorfindel he'd shit himself and make it harder to break in.
