if you hide in deep jungle or in the mountains then tanks can't really get you, then go underground and you can hide from airstrikes too. guerilla groups like the Viet Cong can make themselves basically possible to finish off without going scorched earth on the whole country, but if you do that the whole population will hate you and thus create the next generation of guerillas

Their 'communism' is just authoritarian capitalism lite where its basically capitalist, except the govt can and do take your home whenever you want and you can pay off police officers with bribes to stop yourself getting a speeding ticket or being arrested or whatever. There are no communist countries because communism needs only good actors in order to function, which is impossible.

Anyone who says the US "lost" the Vietnam war is a retard. What the Vietnam war really represents is the failure of the idea of the war of attrition. The military wasn't given any more meaningful goals than stacking as many bodies as possible, and then public opinion eventually made politicians pull them out. It's not as if the US military was forced out of the country in defeat.

North Vietnam and the Vietcong had over a million casualties by the end of the war. The problem is 1) the US was playing on defense only. Not until Nixon did the military actually bomb the north and Cambodia. And 2) US appetite for the war fell significantly. Hippie fags aside, not many people could answer why American men were being forced to go to a godforsaken jungle to die for a war that we weren’t even trying to win.

We wanted to only contain communism, and we were afraid of the ripple effects of outright invading a communist country.

It doesn’t help that in the Korean War western countries stopped communism from spreading to the South, but idk how much it applies to Vietnam. I admittedly don’t know much about Korea.

War's main purpose is killing political undesirables in your own population.

land/housing in vietnam goes back to the government after a certain amount of time. Buying a house is like leasing it from the govt for 30 years or whatever. Once the 30 years is up they come and take it back unless you extend your lease. Also the corruption over there is way higher than anything in europe or america. The u.s. didn't lose by any normal metric. The u.s. killed a substantial portion of the Vietnamese population, utterly destroyed them economically and culturally, and essentially achieved the goal of driving them away from communism.
