every season has a mixture of story arc and monster-of-the-week episodes. first season is a bit crude and some of the monster-of-the-week episodes are bad but the story arc episodes are pretty good from what i remember. it's only half a season long anyway. they got more budget for the next season.

also the story arcs are seasonal so each season ends with a satisfying conclusion so you can just stop watching after any season. probably the best part of the show.

Seasons 1-3 are fantastic, and the ending of season 3 works as a series finale.

Season 4 looses half the cast, has a shit villain, a shit new character, and the tone and feel of the show becomes overall more melodramatic and less fun.

Season 5 is miles better than 4 and essentially works as a soft reboot of the show, but seasons 6 and 7 both have some problems as well.

I would say that anyone interested in it is better off stopping after season 3.

The second option obviously makes way more sense, especially since the mayor's ascension was big enough it would likely draw the governments attention, so pretty impressive they were able to build a massive underground base in a matter of a few months!

Adam was such a lame villain that he didn't even close out the season, instead it was that weird dream episode.

Riley is a shit character and a wooden actor.

Anya is just Cordelia 2.0 but with less charisma (ha).

Except that we first see the Initiative in Season 3, so they've clearly been there for longer than a single summer. As for Adam, he's a minor character, doesn't have nearly the amount of screentime as previous villains, so he doesn't bother me that much. Riley is admittedly an awful character but doesn't become insufferable until season 5.

For it's the opposite. In season 4 he's just a generic guy Buffy is dating. In season 5 he becomes much more complex, and we see him spiraling over insecurities with their relationship, which was very entertaining.

Just wish their breakup was handled better. Buffy catchs him getting sucked off by a vampire lady, he doesn't apologizes and blames her and gives her an ultimatum that she is leaving and then Xander convinces her that she should run and beg for him to stay? That doesn't make sense.

I thought the Riley drama in 5 was a missed opportunity. His justification for messing around with vampires is he was jealous and wanted to know how she felt with Angel/Dracula. But Spike had also told him Buffy liked darker guys and Riley wasn't her type. It is what it is, and if the stories are true and they had a big plan for Cordy that season and her pregnancy "ruined" it, it makes sense that they needed her to have sex with someone to put the pregnancy into the show. Honestly I think season 4's original plan was the same thing they ended up doing with Fred in season 5, Cordelia was gonna die and become the old god that was taking over her body and Angel was gonna mourn and try to teach her to be more human, same role Wesley ended up having in season 5.

The episode where Joyce suddenly dies from a brain tumor makes me genuinly sad when I watch it.
