Why was edgy and angsty media so popular in the 90s anyway? Grunge, punk, Fight Club, Going Down? What was there to be pissed off about in the 90s? Your regularly scheduled episode of Full House was preempted?

I think we still had a basic expectation of dignity and respect, so people still thought they should stand up for themselves against the powers that be.
Nowadays we all understand we have no power and must subjugation ourselves to our bosses, landlords, employers just to survive

things that were edgier were seen as more real and authentic......rather than a source of voyeuristic entertainment

It was better than today, but it wasn't Shangri-La either. The conditions for the eventual social mutations were all present then.
You could say it is in human nature to think of the grass as greener on the neighbour's lawn, or to aspire to more in life when basic needs are met.

Gen X grew up in the burned out aftermath of the counterculture. It was a rough time.

The 90s were when this became impossible to ignore and everyone knew it would just keep getting worse. Instead of addressing the new generation’s valid concerns for the future, the media dogpiled on the new generation and began pushing intergenerational warfare, calling the new generation “lost,” that they had no work ethic, that not wanting to work 100 hours a week for the guarantee just more work rather than appropriate compensation, etc etc.
