The movies are terrible adaptations, even the three decent ones are increasingly awful adaptations and not just because of side plots, but because they result in a cascade failure that means the main overarching plot is almost nonsensical and full of plot holes to those who have not read the books. The movies are full of mischaracterization and completely mismanaged time. Things that are in the book aren’t adapted because they supposedly didn’t have time, yet they had time to include countless nonsensical scenes that weren’t in the book at all?
Not only is the plot effected, the main themes of the story are poorly conveyed through the films. Speaking of side plots though, Harry Potter as a novel series is far more character driven than the films and the films and subsequent characterization suffer due to a lack of more character development and supposedly pointless side plots
