In this movie they tried killing him by filling his lungs with bots when a super man should be able to hold his breath for longer than 5 minutes.

Isolated, I think saving the squirrel was fine. But with the rest of the scene, you get the same information conveyed with Superman saving the dog from being smashed of Supes trying to save small animals during a city-wide threat without adding anything visually interesting or anything further relevant to building characters; at least with saving the dog it doubled as informing the audience about his super breath.
