Gunn's Superman was just a very insecure overreaction to what people criticized with Snyder's Superman
>people in youtube comments made fun of the heavy destruction in Man of Steel and Superman not making a good enough effort to minimize it? let's spend half our movie showing new Superman saving every person and small animal!

While the line fits the character, I'm pretty sure Snyder didn't understand it and just thought it sounded cool.

>Grant Morrison (they/them)
Pretty sure the writer means earlier pre-mental illness Morrison. Either way, Morrison had a better bead on it than most.

Ultimately, Superman isn't supposed to act human and his struggle lies in finding the right way to inspire humans without falling into the trap of controlling them. How much should a god-like being interfere if they have the best of intentions.

> Morrison sees his hero as a god capable of inspiring us all, while Gunn chooses to pull Superman down from Mount Olympus and bring him to our level. It makes the character more relatable, but at what cost?

Superman was never suppose to be a God like character. That is evident from Golden Age Superman. He was a champion of the oppressed and had no problem hanging politicians out windows. You can trace thevdecline in Superman’s popularity the minute Donner movies made him some Jesus character. Now people think Superman is boring as fuck. Nobody wants to watch a symbol and why Spider Man is more popular and Superman is the Big Blue Bore

I'm not going to read the article but the writer is right about one thing, Gunn doesn't get it. The most important thing about Superman is how power. the point of Superman is that he can do anything, but chooses to be a good person. The more ways there are to stop him, the less his choice matters. His choice matters the most when it's the ONLY thing holding him back. Not the threat of Batman or Lex having a plan, or Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel teaming up to fight him, just his own morals and nothing else.

I entirely believe that the Snyder hate cult is just a bunch of insecure manchildren ass mad that their childhood hero Reeves got replaced with another actor. And that's why they hate MoS. It's kind of like what happened with Affleck and Bale but way louder.
It's like they're too retarded to understand that
>(1) the 2 movies are different genres. MoS is an action/drama whereas Superman is an action/comedy
>(2) Reeves can't play the ducking character anymore.
But these boomers are still watching superhero movies and cartoons even though they're turning 50 this decade so they'll probably never understand those extremely basic points.

Nah, it's a lot simpler than that. I hate MoS because when Superman comes back to Metropolis after the kryptoforming machine has been destroyed, and looks around and sees all the death and destruction that Zod has caused, and then hears Zod starting to motive rant, he looks kind of bored.

Not mad, not sickened by the destruction, not horrified, not distraught, not determined, not anything. Just...

What’s the point in Superman if you aren’t going to make him super. The vast majority of people don’t care about the intricacies of Superman’s character because he isn’t really that interesting or popular to begin with. While Gunn’s movie has that feel good aspect it’s still a downgrade in a lot of other ways. What makes him interesting and ultimately good is subjective.

Like, he has a miniaturized city of Kryptonians in a bottle in his Fortress of Solitude. He has villains who are just magic. Everything about Jimmy Olsen.

I know that comics now are basically just terribly confused about their identity, and are forever going back on forth on whether they're supposed to be gritty and serious or try to appeal to kids who wont read them. Probably should be taken as a given that comics after like the 90's don't really count.

I didn't really like the movie. Gunn's whole writing style and sense of humor is really grating. In terms of the Superman stuff I really didn't like how they made his parents evil and had him do a big "I'm so human" speech. He's a tragic character in some ways, he's meant to be slightly apart from humanity and to long for his lost world. I did like that they made him a bit cocky and self righteous, that's a big part of the character that people write off when they try to make him wholesome/hopeful to distance him from Batman. Superman is often a dick and clearly gets some mildly sadistic pleasure from humiliating his enemies.
Anonymous No.213575457
Superman 2025 is one of the worst superhero movies of all times. James Gunn, who excels in directing overdone violence, out of place quips, undeserved melodrama and perverted sex obsession brings all his trademark traits to this rendition of Superman. This isn't a Superman movie, it's a Marvel/Guardians of Galaxy movie with Superman in the middle of it. In fact, Gunn seems to enjoy writing Justice Gang far more than he does writing Superman. The former which ran off two jokes that were repeated ad nauseam throughout the movie.

What makes Superman a compelling character is gone in Gunn's sloppy adaption. He's not particularly strong, he's not particularly wise, he's a poor leader, he's extremely narcissist and gets easily emotional. And this is supposed to be a seasoned Superman. It's almost like Gunn was projecting his own shitty flawed character on to Superman. The only missing touch would be if Lois was a minor.

The action scenes are just a complete mess of CG blob. Superman is basically a rag doll that gets thrown all over the place and nothing in this movie has weight or meaning to it, particularly in its action. There's a scene where Lois and Mr Terrific break into enemy HQ and the whole ordeal is of course settled with a very catchy music montage of all the enemies being dismantled with utter ease. The next scene is of Clark trying to keep a CGI baby from drowning in lava with his deus ex dog arriving in timely manner to save him again. This is straight out of a Marvel movie and has no place in a Superman movie.

This rendition of Lex is also his most shallow depiction. There is no nuance or intelligence to this Lex. He's not particularly shrewd and constantly spills out his plans for everyone to find out. He throws into temper tantrums just like Superman and starts to sob and cry because Superman is better than him. Where is the elegance and intelligence of Luthor? This is basically a spoiled rich kid battling another spoiled strong kid. 1/10, MCU slop.

This is true about Superman, but it feels way too on the nose and obvious to have him actually say it in the movie. A big problem with this movie is that Gunn clearly is more of an edgy guy with regards to comics, he doesn't really like Superman all that much so he's trying to self consciously defend him from criticisms that he himself has about the character.

The hard truth is Snyder cared a lot more and did way more justice for the main characters than Gunn is. Gunn only wants to fuck around with niche pawns. Guys like Peacemaker, Polkadotman, and Bloodsport are characters that otherwise wouldn’t see the light of day. Even Superman’s own movie he has to shine lights on Guy, Mr.T, and Hawkgirl while putting Superman through the humiliation ritual grinder. And if you think that’s the end of it you’re a fool. His role will be reduced heavily in the sequel too when he’s no longer the lead. Gunn’s whole shtick is self irony mockery, which is fine, for some characters but not unilaterally. How many years is it going to be before we get some botched JL lineup that all won’t shut up about their poop fetish. In retrospect especially after S2025’s box office Zaslav might as well have given the keys to Snyder instead.

The kind of people who watch almost exclusively media made for children that is decent enough that an adult can enjoy it too. Their reasoning is basically "Uhmm, so since this movie is made for kids and parents, and parents are adults, that means this movie is for adults and therefore more mature than this other movie with violence and tits targeting teenagers". Same sort of people who play Nintendo games and buy Lego sets. "How could this Lego premium Star Wars set be for kids if it costs two thousand dollars?" I understand watching capeshit or an animated movie here and there, even if you don't have kids, but you have to be mentally deficient to keep watching religiously all these movies and defending them.

>50% political types fighting their culture war against what they perceive as "toxic masculinity"
It's crazy how such a huge part of Americans think that watching and liking movies is some sort of political action. And I can understand somewhat when it comes from the anti-woke crowd, even if they have progressively been falling into the same logic of "we must vote harder with our wallets", but at least it started as a common sense response to modern media feeling like Democrat propaganda. But to the degree leftists do it is surreal. People used to discuss the political subtext of a movie, but most of the time it wasn't the reason to like a movie. Then leftists started liking or disliking think based on their political subtext. But now there isn't even subtext anymore. But it's not even text exactly. It's more like everything comes politically pre-branded and you can tell from the aesthetic and tone alone. The movies just align with your politics or not and the marketing campaign makes it obvious from the first trailer. This Superman movie is a piece of garbage compared to almost any high profile movie from 2 decades ago that wasn't a major disappointment, yet people already decided it's good months ago, because watching it somehow equals to taking a stance against Trump or whatever. The American cultural industries cannot survive like this.

>We may never know Zack Snyder’s master plan for advancing the Superman saga since his Man of Steel opus (The Godfather of superhero movies) was disrupted by studio executives at Warner Bros. who insisted on a comic book series that emulated Christopher Nolan’s nihilistic but more profitable Batman franchise. They wanted darkness, not Snyder’s seriousness. But “dark” means trivial in Millennial film culture, and now, with James Gunn’s new Superman, Warner has gotten the inconsequential movie it always desired.

>Snyder took up the Superman comic book myth then enhanced its meaning as American cultural heritage with classical, spiritual roots. This grand vision opposes fanboy frivolity, which is the basis of Gunn’s commercialized version. His Superman (portrayed by David Corenswet) is introduced as a humiliated, known quantity. He has already lost a battle, slammed into the pavement of Metropolis, and is bloody, wounded, and wheezing.
Anonymous No.213578805 >>213578823 >>213580247

>Gunn’s point is to replace myth and destroy all faith. This Superman movie is the most cynical imaginable. It doesn’t just go against the original Joe Shuster–Jerry Siegel comic book ubermensch that Snyder understood; it reworks a figure for the dystopian millennium and Hollywood resistance.

>There’s no denying that Guardians of the Galaxy director Gunn knows the market he panders to when he emasculates Corenswet’s average all-American masculinity — the essence of the Superman concept — then extracts any romance from Superman’s relationship with reporter Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan is grating throughout their meant-to-be-flirty spats). Lacking Snyder’s erotic pairing of Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, Gunn degrades the humanity of these characters. He victimizes Superman (horribly so in a poorly judged “Pocket Universe” prison sequence featuring nightmarish degradation) and then triggers audience revulsion through evil genius Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), whose key-punch video game tropes remotely attack a man of virtual invulnerability rather than a man of steel. Luthor combats Superman through a combination of science and technology — injecting nanobot GPS trackers into Superman’s bloodstream — using methods that recall the hideous Covid manipulation.

>Gunn’s objective is to banalize the very concept that Snyder sought to elevate. He demeans Superman’s virtue, making him a figure of public distrust vilified in the press, yet gives him goofy boyishness through a mischievous terrier-schnauzer mutt named Krypto. Snyder eliminated the pet, but Gunn uses the dog for dragging Superman’s rumpled body to the icy Fortress of Solitude. The sequence lacks surprise as well as delight. Inane dialogue and jokey asides constitute Gunn’s half-Nolan and half-Marvel hackery.
Anonymous No.213578823 >>213580247
>>213578805
>The conventionality that Gunn resorts to includes a subplot with the Green Lantern League, a jokey crew of XYZ-men knock-offs. They appear briefly as comic relief until Gunn brings them back to complete a battle Superman cannot win by himself. It’s catnip for inconstant comic book consumers.

>Flashback: Except for that stirring, time-reversal scene in the Superman of 1978, the Christopher Reeve films were clunky quasi-camp. Richard Lester took over the sequels, flaunting his signature light comic touch to prove his superiority to the franchise. But Snyder, being of a later generation, triumphed through expression and dedication that few filmmakers can match — and that Marvel/Nolan addicts simply don’t understand. They tolerated Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, although it felt both demoralized and uninspired. Snyder overcame all that by bringing visual richness and emotional power. Gunn, instead, infantilizes the tale. His iteration of Superman is just bad business (like Joss Whedon defacing Snyder’s Justice League), even when it veers into social commentary, fashionably evoking the war in Ukraine.

>This Superman demonstrates the perversity called forth everywhere by our media. The pop-art difference between Gunn’s antipathy and Snyder’s mythology is like that between Taylor Swift’s snide “Anti-Hero” and David Bowie’s valiant “Heroes.”
