the killing is usually actually almost secondary. it's helpful to think of serial killers as being nearly universally highly motivated by intense sexual paraphilias. those come first, then violence/killing comes into play to secure a mate for the style of sex they desire or to enhance the taboo factor since they're already jacked up from paraphilias.
Dahmer didn't actually want corpses. his truest desire that he couldn't figure out how to pull off was a living, pliable, handsome/pretty male that would be like a living doll. someone that would always obey him and never try to leave, sort of a zoned out zombie.
instead of doing his weird as fuck science experiments inside men's skulls he could have just lived in a house instead of sharing one with a family member or living in an apartment - then he could have kept a man there, kept him drugged up constantly and under lock and key. that's realistically the only way Dahmer would have achieved what he was after.
