There are some scenes which are incredibly touching (Nicodemus not joining the disciples, the leper healing, Sermon on the Mount), but the millennial banter modernism ruins it for me on the whole. My wife likes it but I try not to pay close attention to the filler parts. Looking forward to the Passion episodes coming out soon though, imagine the kvetching if they manage not to pull too many punches.

I mean in terms of long form shows how many competitors are there? I truly don't know. Before this show I had basically only seen Passion and Ben Hur as my Jesus movies. I think it's fine. In fact I would almost defend it being 'artistically bankrupt' because it should focus on what it's adapting and not try to be too creative.

There's a market for a straight forward "boring" adaptation. I'm not saying Chosen fulfills that perfectly it's obviously flawed. But I do understand that both the director and the guy who plays Jesus take the show very seriously and try their best to be faithful to scripture so I couldn't bring myself to dislike the show even in it's most corny eye-rolling moments.

You sound earnest in regards to appreciating the show despite its faults, which is admirable and is something more people should be able to do, but it sounds like to me you'd benefit from watching more adaptations of The Gospels.
Everything you like from The Chosen has been done far better elsewhere.
You don't have to start with Pasolini, or something like Vie et Passion du Christ, but maybe something like King of Kings.
That's much closer to the Ben Hur timeframe.
The past just has so much cool stuff that the present is basically copying.

I mostly like it, season 5 was a low point. There's one episode, I think the fifth one, where an extra shows up EIGHT times in the background, going back and forth. It took me out completely.
Overall it's really respectful to the material. The first episode, when he hugs Mary and says he knows her by name, is my favorite scene.
