North by Northwest
Man this was unadulterated kino. Instantly one of my favorite movies of all time. Eva Marie Saint was a certified babe.

Any other Eva and/or Cary Grant movies /tv/ recommends?

The art of lighting is really lost on modern film making. Probably all the jeetcgi slop that's used to fill scenes, but even 10-20 years ago when CGI was good it couldn't replicate. Roger Deakins is probably the last of the dinosaurs, and even his movies that are just okay like Skyfall are fun to watch because of how he uses light on film. Anymore I've almost got to the point where I want a film to be beautiful before I want it to be well written. Dunno what that makes me.

For Eva, NxNW is the most babealicious she ever appeared on film. She's a major acting talent though, check out On the Waterfront if you haven't already seen it. For Cary, Notorious is a must see. Charade was made after NxNW and is serious but much lighter at the same time. Of course if you haven't seen Cary's comedies you need to do so immediately. Last but not least, NxNW is widely considered a remake of Hitch's 1935 film The 39 Steps (pic), which I rewatch at least once a year.

I prefer The 39 Steps, but NxNW must look amazing in a theater. The Lady Vanishes is such a great ensemble drama, I can't believe it hasn't been remade since the late 1970's or so.

Kim Novak in Bell, Book and Candle is straight up ethereal desu, personally my pick if we’re talking about her best looks. I don’t even remember the movie title sometimes, I just type Kim Novak witch movie cuz it lives in my head rent free. They really don’t make them like they used to, however, I still occasionally wish for a gen-Z Greta Garbo to spawn.

Kim is incredibly sexy as a witch, totally agree. Fun movie too. Have you seen Pushover, anon? Her debut, as a femme fatale in a decent noir. Her first scenes are ridiculously sexy.

Yes, I have. And yes, they are, especially once she's back in Fred MacMurray's apartment and takes her coat off. Hubba hubba.

I also love the 39 steps but it is half dumb hitchcock comedy and the finale is a bit limp. Still, great chemistry and a fun adventure. Feels a lot like The Lady Vanishes but trains are basically cheating for kino.

Lighting and /blocking/ go hand in hand. And while people might at least pretend to understand lighting they have no clue what blocking even is anymore. Every scene is a fucking tragedy, like they’re shooting a gonzo documentary. Everyone’s roughly in frame with some headspace? Golden, run it.

>Has anyone ever told you that you overplay your various roles rather severely, Mr. Kaplan? First, you're the outraged Madison Avenue man who claims he's been mistaken for someone else. Then you play the fugitive from justice, supposedly trying to clear his name of a crime he knows he didn't commit. And now, you play the peevish lover, stung by jealousy and betrayal. It seems to me you fellows could stand a little less training from the FBI and a little more from the Actors Studio.
>Apparently, the only performance that will satisfy you is when I play dead.
>Your very next role. You'll be quite convincing, I assure you.

God damn that dialogue is something i miss from old movies, either original or theatre adaptations. The banter was off the charts.

That's such a fun film and Hitchcock invented another visual metaphor for fucking (the fireworks) as well as getting away with an amazing bit of dialog:

Frances Stevens: You want a leg or a breast?
John Robie: You make the choice.

Well, I really like that sequence when they're handcuffed together (including the adorable older couple at the inn). My only serious complaint about the film is how little Madeleine Carroll is in the first third - barely at all.
