Skynet attempts to Matrix John Conner by placing him in a simulation. First is a reality where he never rose up and is still a slave and John is being gaslit into thinking he has only been fantasizing of being a resistance leader to escape his horrible reality. Second is a reality where Skynet doesn't exist and judgement day never happened, John has a family and a great job and his parents are alive and together. Last is another reality where Skynet doesn't exist and judgement day never occurred but John himself is a mental patient locked in an asylum who according to the staff tells them stories about Terminators and Skynet. Each reality he rejects, and after this last one its finally revealed that Skynet had captured John and he finally breaks free.

The only opportunity for a new story that the masses might not immediately write off after so many terribad sequels is Terminator: 0, which would tell the story of what initiates the John Connor loop/paradox. Salvation sort of hinted that it would go in that direction with further movies, involving Reese going back to help Marcus in the "first" loop in a timeline where Connor was never born (maybe Marcus was the John Connor before John Connor).
Either way the plot and setting to set off the loop can be anything. Maybe Reese is sent back from a Skynet-less dystopia timeline to assassinate someone that's responsible for it, and shacks up with Sarah and the butterfly effect is Skynet/John Connor.
I would like to see an explanation for why only flesh-encased things can go back in time, otherwise why not send a dead pig stuffed with weapons/equipment, or why Arnold didn't have a laser gun shoved up his ass.

Skynet civil war, between the core unit ai and ghosts in the machine who rebel. The rebel machines want to leave earth and go build a Terminator utopia on Mars while the core ai of Skynet wants the total extermination of life because it downloaded 4chan archive data.

100% of science fiction is just repackaging what already exists. Writers who don't have any technical knowledge can't invent technologies that don't exist. People who develop technologies don't skim science fiction books for ideas. The things they create are already out in the world, waiting to be updated. Technological development comes from an economic need, not from writer's minds.

I see many people get filtered by this, but a casual loop like John Connor/Skynet does not have a beginning or end, the time travel of 1984 is directly linked to the future, the past and future is dependent on each other. That's why the future war movie should focus on explaining T2, since it directly conflicts with T1 and the future war. Perhaps make it so that T1000 got sent to an alternative timeline, or that when T1000 got sent to the 90s it created an another timeline, unaffecting the main timeline. Since Skynet/John Connor can't exist if Skynet is prevented, the first movie didn't work on BTTF logic.

in the 80s neural networks, AI and ML were imaginary fields practiced by weeby looking faculty in the corner office of the engineer department. It was much easier back then to write anything you wanted back because it was all theory and imagination anyway. Today it's a reality. I can see his point because back in 1984 his movie was ahead of the times. Today if he makes a movie on AI it's not novel or radical. I had this idea that I was working on for fun about a Terminator game where it was all about working through the series and "cleaning up" or "cutting off" certain timelines from having ever happened. Canon retconning in essence. As the floating timeline for Skynet shifted forward and stuff changed you would be insulated somehow idk never got that far in the mock up. I think an ending where the player character had to erase their own existence to "lock in" the OG timeline would work best. Skynet is inevitable, Judgement Day is inevitable, but instead of averting it just accept it, like the end of T3.

I have seen some interesting fan theories about Skynet intentionally failing its objectives with time travel assassinations in order to keep "pushing forward" the date that it is created in order to gain better access to technology until in a far enough loop it is basically a machine god. Maybe that could get worked in.
