In the very first fucking episode we learn he spent the first 2 days with the death note writing the names of the worst people he could think of, because he was under the assumption a shinigami would soon show up to kill him. Light to begin with want's to kill criminals who are universally recognised as wrong doers to establish some legitimacy in his dispensing of justice.
He can't start right off the bat with notable people with many followers since those people would turn against Kira, instead of embracing his justice after seeing him punish the wicked.

By the second half of the show it's revealed that during Kira's five year reign, 70% of crime and most importantly all wars have stopped.
Presumably Kira makes examples out of politicians who declare war or pursue unjust policies by killing them. He can also blackmail politicians into doing what he wants by threatening to kill their families as he does with the President.

His dad is the chief of police, he’s the top student in Japan and he studies so much that he often considers murdering his classmates just for going to parties, he’s a bootlicking system-loving corporate shill. He literally thinks crime and decay are just caused by isolated individuals who ‘don’t know how to follow the rules’. He sits in his room paid for by his cop dad, growing seething an murderously bored because the only thing he does is study to keep approval and status from mommy and society, he got his police job by stealing information from his dad’s pc for the purpose of covering up his murders, his entire purpose in the police is to sabotage their investigation and kill the people behind it. He’s literally just some cushy smartass with some dumbass opinions based on what he thinks is gross on tv and in media. Kills me so many people can’t see this

Light is the most popular kid in his class and is shown numerous times as well liked with friends and gfs.
You make it sound like Light kills because of his insecurities, like a school shooter who wants revenge for being rejected by society.
In Light's case, it's not his failure to measure up to societies' standards, it's societies failure to measure up to his.
Light has no need for vengence, he wants justice.

>You’ll notice he’s walking around with no friends
He had friends but they were never relevant to the plot although the the fact that he’s very popular and can easily get girl was relevant at a few points in the story.
>being pissed listening to and thinking about the news
He did keep an eye on the news but he was never realy mad about it, he mostly just thought that things should be better.

Light's views on morality and humanity are just wrong. If a homeless person stole two apples from a farmer's market to feed himself and his daughter, Light would kill him.
>>213581501
This. But this thread seems to be getting lost in the weeds now. It's explicitly stated that Light's ego reaches god-like proportions very early on, like by the second episode. He takes a world view similar to an apex predator where it becomes not moral or immoral to kill, it just is.
Basically, our protagonist goes insane by episode 2. You could say it's actually the most realistic depiction of mental illness in all of anime

Two: The death note will only kill the individual whose name is written, to minimise collateral. This is why Light can't just write in the note book for someone to shoot L or Near.

The natural life span part of death note confuses me, what do they mean by "natural".
I assume the death note is considered an unnatural way to die so if you killed someone with it, it would be able to override any natural lifespan they had remaining.
Does it imply that people are fated to die on certain days either through failing health, accidents or regular murder and the number the shinigami see is a countdown to that day.

We know Light isn't a good person simply because of how he dealt with Naomi. Now you can argue that killing her was an act of self preservation. And that is fine. But he didn't just kill her. He gloated about it to her face. He relished in it. He enjoyed it.

He didn't lament the circumstances that caused him to have to get rid of her. Her didn't show any remorse for being "forced" to kill a non-criminal. He basically laughed about it. That is when Light dropped all pretenses of being a good person.

>And yet, the guy who invented the microwave for $2 never made anything else of note.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_N._Hall
Robert Noel Hall (December 25, 1919 – November 7, 2016) was an American engineer and applied physicist. He demonstrated the first semiconductor laser and invented a type of magnetron commonly used in microwave ovens. He also contributed to the development of rectifiers for power transmission.

While at General Electric during World War II, he developed a magnetron for radar jamming, which led to the development of the microwave oven.[3] While studying the characteristics of p-i-n diodes used as power rectifiers, Hall had a key insight, which resulted in his being co-credited with William Shockley and W. T. Read, Jr., for the analysis of nonradiative carrier recombination in semiconductors. Hall developed the first semiconductor laser diode in 1962, while working at General Electric in Schenectady, New York.[4] In the 1970s, Hall's work focused on photovoltaics and solar cells. He retired in 1987, having been granted 43 U.S. patents during his career.

https://lemelson.mit.edu/resources/percy-spencer
Percy L. Spencer is best remembered for creating one of the most iconic kitchen appliances, the microwave oven.

Spencer and Raytheon put much effort into developing the microwave oven to be used for cooking purposes and filed for a patent on October 8, 1945. He was later awarded the patent on January 24, 1950. The first commercial microwave oven was called “Radarange,” marketed in 1947. It was a different sight from today’s microwaves, costing $3,000, weighing about 750 pounds and standing 6 feet tall. It took about 20 years before a more convenient-looking microwave was ready for home-use.

Spencer obtained over 100 patents and retired from Raytheon, passing away on September 7, 1970. He was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame in 1999.
