Why has nobody attempted to make horror kino out of the Diablo franchise (I & II)?

Maybe if they did this in the very early 2000s it could have been good but at this point they would just bastardize it.

The short answer is because Blizzard kept around Blizzard North on sufferance and got rid of them as soon as they could.
The long answer is because you'd need to focus on being faithful to the tone and atmosphere, you'd need an extremely talented director with little to no studio interference (put in these game references! explain this to the audience! add a love triangle between warrior, rogue and sorceror! add all this other shit to make the money laundering more effective!), and you'd need a really good mix of practical and CGI effects. So nothing Hollywood is capable of.

Ok faggot I'll explain it to you, since I have the time to spare. The movie 13th Warrior exists. You take that movie and its village scenes, you cut the dialogue by half and you've got the starting scenes in Tristram, with a trio of warrior, rogue, and sorceror (names never give) speaking with the townspeople before setting out into the cathedral. That's act 1 of the movie.
Act 2 onward there should be almost no dialogue. It's all progressively more and impossible horror as the trio barely manage to survive their encounters with demons and undead going through the labyrinth. Bits of story exposition is given out by the sorceror reading through the tomes he was sent by the Vizjeri to find. The trio manage to kill the Butcher which boosts their confidence. They find the tomb of king Leoric but don't fight him in any kind of action sequence, he gives some straightforward exposition about the story and they lay him to rest, assuring him they'll find his son. They return to Tristram and make preparations for their continued descent, and receive the final parts of story reveal from Cain about Diablo and Lazarus.
Act 3 is the characters descending into the deeper, Hell-bastion section of the Cathedral and things turn to shit once they encounter Lazarus himself, who forces them to split up. But once separated the movie goes into Silent Hill mode and endlessly harasses the characters with terrors, they can't even fight back, only flee. The sorceror goes insane and vanishes into the darkness. The warrior manages to kill Lazarus, but only after he's managed to corrupt the rogue and the warrior is forced to put her out of her misery. Then alone, the warrior has to travel through the portal and face down Diablo. And we all know how that ends, with him plunging the soulstone into his own head.

There, now get a good director, a good cinematographer, a good special effects team and a good set designer team and you've got a good action horror movie.

Partly animated but with emphasis on sound effects + narration, this is where the original voice for Deckard Cain would thrive

Then rent out the licensing to be aired on Netflix but not them have any say on creative direction. There wouldn't need to be any one

character, each episode could focus on a different hero of sanctuary (or villain)

Diablo 1 was ahead of its time with ARPGs. Diablo 2 is fondly remembered with the multiplayer experience. It was the time when Internet access was becoming a hit, the early 2000's. These games are time capsules of a bygone era and more simplistic times.

Diablo 3 is an okay game but they completely ruined its reputation with the horrendous launch. Diablo 4 is just the same but Blizzard has ruined its reputation beyond repair.

Diablo 1 is much more tactical and moment to moment. You don’t have any crowd control spells until at least halfway through the game, and even then you end up fighting a lot of enemies who can just be flat out immune to certain damage types in the old D&D tradition. It means the player is tested to manage enemies and attack angles. You have to be prepared for anything. It also has incredible spooky atmosphere and plays everything 100% seriously. Enemies also don’t respawn so you can’t just grind out bigger numbers to win. You are weak and will probably die. On the other hand, itemization is amazing. Finding a Sword +5 damage feels great.

D2 expands on the general vibe but the overworld and more intense encouragement of grinding has always left a sour taste in my mouth. It still has good spooky vibes, great writing and production, but there’s something lost when players can just yolo into a dense mob and spam area of effect skills to clear them out. You can still get caught off guard though with a bad mini boss.

D3 wasn’t for me at all. Definition of loot treadmill with zero investment in anything else. Numbers are inflated beyond belief so who cares if an enemy has trillions of HP?

Acts 2-4 have no decent quests to support. Almost all of them are just in service of the overall quest. Act 1 and 5 treats the side quests like little interesting detours or fun set pieces.

D1 could be made into a cool horror adventure movie about a guy delving deeper and deeper into a demonic dungeon. D2 basically has no story, and what it does have hinges on something that would be obvious to the viewer. D3 is pretty stupid. D4 is probably game which would translate the best into a film since the villains are clearly defined, and the narrative revolves around each character's own trials and sacrifices.

Diablo 3 has a story structure that doesn't work for a diablo game. You can't be an all-powerful nephalem and also helplessly watch during cutscenes as important story events like Cain dying or Leah turning into Diablo happen. This is one of the key reasons D2 had a separate story for Marius and the player character, so that they could have the dark gothic horror stuff as well as the power fantasy of defeating evil without compromising the agency of the player.
Gameplay-wise, it started out fine but was too much of a side-grade rather than strictly being D2 but improved, had serious dopamine junk syndrome, and then when it became seasonal the character progression regressed down to braindead simplicity.
Visually and atmospherically it was hampered by the dark and gorey stuff being insincere and performative rather than subtle and realistic, as well as the graphics actually being very primitive for the standards of the time.
Multiplayer being limited to 4 party members and no functional PvP was retarded.
