They really handwaved the part where Amy somehow starts teaching people the non-linear time language, we don't really understand what impact it has in the movie

No no no, the gist of the story was that learning the universal language allows you to travel through time or some shit. Guess what, if the aliens knew how to travel through time they could just as easily have traveled through time themselves.
