It definitely gets better after the first episode.
A lot of the first episode is devoted to asspulls and exposition which are necessary because New Blood was meant to be more of a definitive ending which made it tricky to do Resurrection at all without twisting into knots.
Once that stuff's out of the way it becomes more of its own thing.
slight spoiler: Dex doesn't do a kill until episode 3, but I think this is a good thing, they didn't feel obligated to again open the season with him killing someone, and they build and ramp up to the killing a bit more naturally
