Great movie until those last 20 minutes
Both RLM and Drinker recommend it, nothing /tv/ can say will dissuade me from watching it now.
Except spoilers but I'm not coming back to this thread to read them.
>>213592473I knew from the teaser I was going to watch it and nothing else. The across the board praise it received only confirmed my intuition.
>>213592417 (OP)last 20 minutes were the best
The last 20 minutes saved the movie, as the reveal that there is an actual witch made the movie go downhill.
SPOILER WARNING
It was really cool and mysterious until the voodoo shit. Kinda killed the vibe for the rest of the movie.
And they never really explained how it works, they kept dropping these hints about "parasites" with the classroom and the ant documentary, but I feel like they had no payoff. What was with the black puke that only happened that one time, what was with the spiky tree, what was with the M4 in the sky and the specificity with the time "2:17" other than that's when she performed the ritual? What was with the bell and why did it only work for some and not others? If she was supposedly dying, her condition was awfully good for the entirety of the movie. What was with the kid abductions? Did she have a way to extend her life through the kids or what? Why did the kids randomly turn around towards the druggie? How did Alex's branch send the kids off and not the parents? Why did the branch snap stop Brolin and the parents from attacking? The condition to stop them attacking was dipping the branch in water. What was up with the salt? Was it merely a trigger or was it some sort of boundary that the people under control wouldn't cross? Why was the cop so hypochondriac about the finger cut and the needles?
I am overanalyzing the fuck out of things but plotholes leave a sour taste with just about any movie. If it was just "supernatural", I would shrug it off, but they established so much of the stuff beforehand.

Do you watch AI generated movies because consistent writing and structure means nothing to you?
>>213595552This is the worst brainlet take ever. Not everything needs some expanded universe with a wiki containing 10,000 pages. Comic book movies and star wars ruined these people.
i just went and saw it this afternoon. Thought it was really cool.
>>213594993>And they never really explained how it worksBecause it’s bloody magic you hack
>>213596269And I didn't ask for anything that extreme, just explain it in the fucking movie.
I've never watched a single Star Wars movie and the only "comic book movies" I've seen have been Fantastic Four (2005), Ghost Rider and Spider Man (2002)
Do you see how easily you project shit onto others and then attack that strawman?
Does it not matter at all what media you consume, just whatever nonsensical slop as long as you can fry your dopamine receptors with constant visual stimulus? Who needs consistent writing, just have whatever baby sensory shit for you to stare at while you're drooling.
Have you read a single book in your life, nigger?
>>213596359How do you know? Did you ask the director or the writer? Why add all these details that could be explanatory and then go "oh fuck it, it's just magic"?
Did you watch the movie, like it and now any criticism feels like a personal insult? Detach yourself a little, fucking autist. It wasn't "1/10 worst fucking movie ever made" even with its inconsistencies, it was an 8/10 experience, but could've so easily jumped up to 9 or even a 10 if it wasn't for the lack of so many payoffs.

>Did she have a way to extend her life through the kids or what? Yes, obviously
>Why did the kids randomly turn around towards the druggie? It was dramatic
> How did Alex's branch send the kids off and not the parents?Used the object which belonged to the kids (the black soup + school placards) on the branch
> Why did the branch snap stop Brolin and the parents from attacking? It didn’t, the parents didn’t stop attacking until the witch died because she had instructed them ‘kill whoever crosses the salt line’. Once she died her spell ended

It's not a good movie at all
>Literally solved 20 minutes in, then it's just time wasting
>Only 3 characters matter, Father, child, witch
>Everything else has no impact on the plot whatsoever
>Entire plot relies on every character basically being retarded, especially the police who seemingly did no investigation at all.
>Witch/Kid was completely underdeveloped plot meanwhile the film is over 2 hours and only has meaningfully half an hour of actual content.
>Not scary
>Lead character is a fucking ugly as fuck zoomer.
>Film completely falls apart with the most basic of scrutiny, like why didn't police bother triangulating location of the kids since they ran literally in a straight line, why did they not find the aunt suspicious, why was the kid who was buying 30 cans of food a day, not under survellience? Why did they ignore a cop of theirs go missing? Why did that cop not bother to radio in he know where the kids are wtf.
Ending scene was fun, but the film would have been more fun if she actually used the kids as weapons.

Explain the black puke the one and only time, M4, significance of 2:17, cellar kids doing a random jumpscare, bell doing nothing for Wong's boyfriend and the logistics of her "curing herself"
I watched an interview with the director on this podcast and he actually seems like the most normal dude ever. I'm used to directors being autistic retards like Coogler or Peele. but Cregger seems really cool. He says the only scene he tried to make funny was the Brolin FUCK part.

And after Barbarian's brilliant take down on the real danger of toxic masculinity I was expecting something equally insightful here. I guess a dream scene is a good time to let Lynch's influence in.
>significance of 2:17It's when the kids left. Outside of that, there is no significance, and I don't see why there should be. I think the only purpose of stating the exact time of the incident is to demonstrate that it happened at a specific time, and not to say that there's anything special about the time.
>bell doing nothing for Wong's boyfriendThe movie explains this one. The attack spell has five elements: the twig, the item belonging to the controlled person (Wong's ribbons), the hair of the target (other gay guy), and the blood of the controller (Gladys), and the bell. Gladys snaps the twig to put Wong under her spell, which makes him drop the phone and freeze. Then, Gladys rings the bell, which causes Wong to attack and kill his target. Then, Gladys replaces the now-dead gay guy's hair with Justine's hair, snaps the twig again, and rings the bell again to make Wong go after Justine.
We can infer that the twig Alex picks up at the end has his classmates' possessions wrapped around it already, and we see him do the rest.

>>213594993If anything it explained too much too early and it took some of the horror away. Once you see the witch do the ritual on the on Wong you know everything you need to know. Before that when weird shit was just happening with no explanation it was much more effective.

If the movie is an allegory for gun violence does that make Alex a school shooter?
> Director of Weapons Zack Cregger spoke to Vanity Fair and explained more about Gladys, where she came from and what she represents – as well as how Amy Madigan influenced a lot of the decisions around how to play her. He explains how Gladys and her witchcraft represent alcoholism and claims it to be autobiographical to his own childhood.
“The last chapter of this movie is straight-up autobiographical. That was my childhood. You live with an alcoholic parent, and there’s this inversion of the dynamic. The child can become the [caregiver].”
“This foreign substance comes in and it changes everyone’s behavior,” Cregger says. “The house becomes a scary place. You can go to school and act like everything’s cool, and then you come home and you hide from a zombie parent. That felt so real to me.”
>>213602064Sounds like bullshit. Sounds like he wanted to make a school shooting allegory movie, but can't sell it like that and can't talk about it like that because of the rabid 2A crowd.
>>213601905I also thought this was going to be an "elevated" horror movie about school shootings but when it turned out that the kid didn't want any of this I wasn't sure what the message was supposed to be.
After learning that the director is from WKUK, I think the weapon motif was just meant to fuck with people. I don't think Cregger actually has anything to say, he probably just wanted to make a fun movie or something.

>>213602284What does the witch represent if this is a movie about school shootings? The dark side of white america?
If Weapons happened in real life (assuming the occult powers in the film are also real):
>witch summons all of the children at 2:17
>the children run outside
>flood lights and motion detectors are going off all across the neighborhood since children are sprinting through people’s backyards and down the street
>since so many children are missing, it becomes a federal investigation and massive amounts of funding and manpower are assigned to it
>immediately the federal agents gather camera footage from citizen recordings and are able to deduce where the children are before lunch time
>a squad of elite tactical special forces breaches the house and kills the witch
The end
>>213596611She's a witch that can control people using what's effectively voodoo doll rules. The movie actually gets pretty detailed in how the mechanisms work.
>>213602471If you enjoy making yourself mad I won't stop you, but that's not what I said. I don't care since I had fun with the movie anyway. I'm just discussing a film on the film & television board.
>>213602498If occult powers in the film were real then the federal agents would be in the employ of the Evil One and never solve the crime because it's a mass trauma mind control event broadcast to everyone's homes.

>>213601524She thinks it's hot to cheat on you and get aids. Drop her.
>>213602498>>213602569It is real life, the movie is a soft disclosure of the use mkultra to weaponize individuals and how abducted children are used to extend the lives of aging ghouls in power.
>>213599992Total horseshit, the pack of feral kids tearing an old woman apart is not inherently funny. That scene following the lead kid as she smashes through the house closing the distance is sick as fuck
But he deliberately had the witch go "oh no!" and waddle out of the house old-woman-style, he deliberately had the shots of the woman running past the camera, then a comedic beat, then the pack of kids running past the same spot like Scooby Doo, and he deliberately chose to shoot it in broad daylight
He has to be fucking with people by saying that wasn't intentional
>>213603502Honestly I laughed during that scene but I don't know if it felt "funny" in the moment, it felt "cathartic", it's a relief that the witch is getting what's coming to her in the most entertaining possible way.
Honestly the best horror ending I've seen in years.

>>213599990Didn't watch the while video but if I ever saw anyone carrying a gallon of substance called PCP, I would run and get the fuck away from that person as fast as possible before he becomes homicidal and cannibalistic.
>>213603502the only interview i've seen with the director he said that he deliberately made shit on the line of being funny/disturbing. he said that he even sat in during test screenings and the movie had wayyy more moments like that but if he didn't hear the audience laugh he cut it out. reminds me of ari aster where it confuses audiences whether or not things should be funny
>>213597068She struck me as a hilariously Roald Dahl esque character. You can almost visualize Quentin Blake's illustrations of her fleeing in terror at the end.

>>213597021Cuckoo she was just a girl.
>>213602399“Tonight, a comedian died in Montclair, New Jersey. Somebody knows why.”
>>213600580The witch wasn't supposed to be a drag queen, retard. She represents Laura Loomer and female conservatives who lull conservatives into supporting the same weapons that are killing our children. That's why the movie is called The Weapons. It's literally about weapons.
>>213597068Nah the kids ripping her to shreds was hilarious and cathartic
>>213602498Yeah, I was also thinking this, the conceit of the story would almost only work properly if it was in a very dated, rural, "darkness still exists here" setting like To Kill a Mockingbird, in fact even the claim that they disappeared into the night seems hard to buy when you see the shots of the well illuminated neighborhood with all of the motion sensor lights turning on.
Mostly just funny to think about because criticizing dreamlike kafkaesque satire for "not being realistic" is for losers.

>>213605533It's 217 because that's the bad room number from The Shining (in the book). At least Zach says he thinks that's where it came from. It sounds more like he chose 217 because it sounded ominous and then remembered that detail later.
The fact that everyone sees their pet political complaint in this movie must be really entertaining to him when he's explained already that the core stuff with Alex and Gladys is about the horrors of having an alcoholic parent. Fantastic rorschach test of a film. I think the rest of the stuff with the teachers, parents, and police is mostly commentary on how society is so ineffectual at helping kids in horrible situations.
>>213605669That makes a lot of sense but I'm still pretty sure that's at least why the specific number of kids who went missing was 17
>>213605448Longlegs had a better start but this had a better end.
>>213605699Yeah, I think the number of kids was chosen to line up with the 217 number rather than the other way around. It's fun to try to pull meanings out of it though.
It was pretty obviously about how Taylor Swift intends to use her significant influence over people to turn them into weapons for the latest gynocracy.

Completely agree. Last 20 mins completely broke any suspension of disbelief.
How TF didn't the feds figure out where the kids were if it took the hick and the school teacher 5 mins with a map? Also how many cameras and sensors did those kids set off running towards Alex's house? You're also telling me the feds searched Alex's house and spoke to zombie mom and didn't figure ANYTHING out?
Ludicrous. Took the film from a solid 9/10 to a 7 at best.

Its definitely supposed to say something about school shootings with the candle lighting, distraught griefing parents, empty class room except the one bullied kid, and the movie just gives up being subtle just showing off an ar15 with the kill count on the side randomly at some point.
Alex’s 2 parents, 17 kids.
But the actual in universe weapons being like tranced shaman zombies has nothing to do with that because its a supernatural witch movie lol. He should have made a stronger connection between real weapons and the trance zombies because i literally forgot about the school shooting shit in the second half when the dad just says

>>213597792Personal objects used in the ritual bind the owner of said object to the will of the spellcaster. (Kids objects, Wong's award, etc.)
Hair bound to the stick makes you the target of those bound to the will of the spellcaster. (Teacher, gay boyfriend, etc.)
Dunking the stick removes the target.
Death of the spellcaster removes all spells.
All of this is clearly spelled out and, in some cases, repeatedly demonstrated in the movie. I rated the film 6/10 originally... now settling in closer to 5/10. It has a lot of problems but not explaining things is NOT one of them. If anything, the film explains too much, it makes the witch and magic mundane.

>What was the spiked tree?Magic tree.
>Whats up with the M4 and the 2:17?Thats the dad just having a nightmare. Its either nothing or just a small piece of foreshadowing thanks to magic still lingering around.
>Whats with the bell? Its part of the spell. The gist is that the witch would grab a stick from the magic tree. If you put something thats yours, like blood, you pretty much designate yourself like somekind of master. If you put someone elses shit like hair or trinkets in the stick with your blood, you now have control of the person. Then you can make some kind of trigger using the bell or the salt, where "If you do shit= this happens" with the person under control.
>If she was dying, why was it that she good? Whats up with the abductions then? Did she had a way to extend her lifespan? She is apparently taking life force from whoever ends up under her control. Thats why she wanted the kids. The takes control of them like a puppet master, and syphons their life. The more she takes control, the stronger she is.
>How did the branch snap sent off the kids after Gladys, and stopped the parents?Gladys burned the kids stuff and put the ashes on that branch. When Alex put his blood on it and a hair of Gladys (not the ones wrong the wig, one of her actual hairs) he pretty much took control of the kinds. When the kids killed Gladys, she was no longer in control of anyone because the main master is fucking dead. The control was now of Alex by default.
>Whats up with the salt?Trigger. Like the bell.
>Why was the cop scared of the niddle pinch?Anon, he got pinched by a crackheads needle. Sometimes that shit has aids or disease. You can't really cure that shit. plus drugs or infections.
