Was there a push for Sinophilia in the 2000s for any particular reason?

Anime was eating into youth demographic viewing and the west tried and failed to compete.

90s anime had a stranglehold influence over the entire comics/cartoon industry throughout the 2000s. Boomer creatives just associated asian shit with kung-fu and Chinese aesthetics because they didn't realize Japan was it's own country and assumed it would be popular with the kids.

Hong Kong going back to China caused the late 90s sinophilia that caused those cartoons to be made.

This is completely right. Rumble in the Bronx dropped and all of us kids were like "whoa, who IS this guy?" and actually went back and watched his kung fu stuff, and HK flicks in general. Also Wu Tang Clan was still mainstream popular, and anime was picking up steam. Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon were popular but still niche; in my area you had to get up at like 6am on Sunday morning to catch it and it was only an episode a week. Finally in 1999 Pokemon started airing stateside and blew the doors off of everything, and The Matrix made HK stuff even more popular. They were putting Yuen Woo Ping's name on the cover of everything.

Xiaolin Showdown seems rather excellent in my memory, but I get the feeling that if I watch it today I'd be disappointed. I recall it being a very creative and likeable show for the time.
