That scene also has an early acting role for John Spencer, who went on to play a very successful role as the White House Chief of Staff in the TV show "The West Wing"

Chud needs to be wordfilter swapped with cuck, and incel with tranny. Would make 4chan a lot more entertaining and stupid parrots with undeveloped vocabularies might start taking the hint.

"No".
The fuck is he going to do about it? He can't shoot you, since he needs you to turn the key. On the other hand, once you turn the key he's free to shoot you anyway.

Brilliant little prologue, though it takes the rest of the film a while to get back up to the same level after that opening. Too much time spent with Broderick running about Smalltown, USA.

russia didn't have the ability or will do hit back. Their military doctrine around nukes is the opposite of ours. Individuals controlled small clusters of nukes and they could decide whether or not to launch. The vast majority wouldn't have had the stones to retaliate. Plus, russia is and was a shithole third world tier country. We hit them hard enough we would have stopped their ability to strike back proportionally.

I like the scene later in the movie where they're leaving the missile launch center when they're installing the WOPR controls and just acting like it was no big deal that one of them pulled a gun on the other

I always thought the implication was that he had shot him, and WOPR was them not wanting another dead airman on their hands on account of a drill.

All those missile combat crews go through strict personnel reliability tests, irl if you pulled a gun on the other guy more than likely both your careers would be sunk, so maybe they just agreed to let it go rather than ending their careers

It's very selective and if you do it for a little while without screwing up, it's considered a fast track for better jobs and promotions. Once they're down there, it's mostly doing tests and inspections and whatever drills they throw your way.

Their reliability program is pretty wild too, for example you're not considered for the job if you're not married, because they want personnel who have something to lose. A lot of information about these weapons and the people and training behind them isn't classified, there are a few documentaries you can watch on youtube. The best one that's hard to find online is by Frederick Wiseman, I can only find a clip or two on yt.

There's another one by the BBC that's good too.

This is also very common unofficially in many white-collar contexts. If you want to advance past a certain level in the business world, you better have a wife and ideally also children. For people who "work for a boss", this is an indicator that they have a family to care for and therefore are less likely to go "lmao fuck this shit I quit" when they feel fed up. For enterpreneur types, even in smaller-scale business, having a wife (and kids) is a sign that, at least on some baseline level, you're probably an alright-ish guy if some woman trusts you to have married you and to sleep under the same roof with you etc.
Don't underestimate the value of marriage in these social dances.

IIRC for the real thing, you need 2 different control centers, each staffed with 2 people, to initiate the launch of a wing of missiles. Basically at least 4 people have to agree the order was valid and go through the steps to fire.
