Holy shit what a nice surprise this movie was. I went in blind expecting some low budget goofy amateur film, but it really felt like a spiritual succesor to Climax by Gaspar Noé. If you told me he directed it, I would have absolutely believed you.

The eventual pay-off for the journey is a bit lacking, but I loved how it lingered on the 'process'. It took me half of the movie to even make sense of what the actual direction of the plot was going to be, like what was actually going on. The 'eye' thing and neck twitch that started in a subtle way eventually gave it away. At first I didn't like the switch to the second protagonist, bjt man she turned out to be arguably better, even though she got less screen time. You could tell she was having fun with her role.

Highly recommended if you like psychedelic one-shot movies with nice cinematography.

A lot of what used sponsor them is either a) no longer looking at luxury exposure because their market is broader now, or b) getting paid for licensing their image

The early 90s dramas weren't successful because of that. They also used have rules you couldn't show Koreans as superstitious or believing in magic, which obviously cut down on their horror output initially. However, now they tailor dramas to end markets- there are kdramas tailored to France which will have french relevant sub themes like there are kdramas made to make it into US markets.
There is still a basic code, so you're never getting those 1970s ending where the fight against those things is pointless and you're just sacrificing yourself in a void. Recommending Karl Edward Wagner's "In A Lonely Place" short story collection. One of the best horror collections ever and contains "Sticks" which inspired the Blair Witch Project. The collection go republished physically and digitally in 2021 so you shouldn't have trouble finding a copy.
