Except that he left absolutely nothing for the third film to continue or build upon. Him deciding to dismantle the incredibly open ended setups that Abrams gave him is fine, but he left absolutely nothing in their place for a third director to come in to finish. Abrams ended up having to do the third film exactly because how little there was left to make a third film out of in the trilogy so Disney couldn't get anyone with any skill to come in a finish the overarching story.
TLJ also goes out of it's way to shit on fan theories and speculation, like Rey's lineage, that the first film didn't even touch upon.
So no, Rian didn't just go after Abrams, the film was a giant 'Fuck You' to anyone that cared about the franchise.

The whole sequence was a trainwreck and just destroyed all the drama of the 'fleet manoeuvres' plotline. I mean, if small ships can Hyperspace away? Some more important characters could have led 'small boats' Dunkirk-style evacuation, or else gone away and just come back with 'space mines' to drop in the path of the pursuing fleet. Anon this is how all good actors get into character. They create backstories and futures to make the present situation more real to them so the character pops. Often their headcanon turns out to be better than the script like this one. Either way John was good in the role and gave them exactly what they asked for on screen. What else do you want?
