Holden embodies a force that transcends human morality and reason. His actions throughout the novel, brutal, manipulative, and often incomprehensible, can be understood as the manifestation of a philosophical and metaphysical vision of violence, power, and fate. At his core, Judge Holden represents chaos and the elemental nature of violence as an intrinsic force of the universe. He sees the world not in terms of good or evil but as a battlefield where strength, domination, and survival are the only true laws. His deeds, massacres, torture, and unrelenting cruelty, aren’t simply acts of malevolence but expressions of a cosmic will that celebrates war and conflict as the natural order of existence.
Holden’s intellectual arrogance and his near-supernatural presence suggest that he perceives himself as a kind of god or elemental force. He often lectures on natural history, law, war, and philosophy, revealing his belief in the inevitability and necessity of violence. His actions are driven by a desire to impose his vision of absolute control and to demonstrate that all human institutions, including morality and law, are fragile illusions easily shattered by raw power. The Judge's behavior pushes those around him to confront the dark realities of human nature and the brutal landscape of the American frontier.

Carry the fire, don't lose hope even in the most disheartening of circumstances. It was written for his son since he had him when he was older than usual and he wouldn't be around for him as an adult most likely.

The way the book is written is unironically the best part of reading it, and is also the real reason it is unadaptable rather than the violence. It's like the writing transports you back to another age where mankind was more primitive, more connected to nature, and less scientific.

This book is for people who are prone to developing stockholm syndrome. You go through many chapters of run on sentences, pointless scenes and made up words. After a certain point it probably breaks your mind and you convince yourself that the awfulness is good, because there's no way you've spent this much time reading filler, looking up words (that don't exist) and trying to understand a piece of shit, it has to be a masterpiece.
