I greatly enjoyed S1 but it annoyed me a lot when the showrunners were saying in interviews that they were foregrounding the Japanese characters more and making sure they were avoiding white saviourism.
It's such bullshit, because that's all something the novel had already done. A lot of the narrative is told from the perspective of various other characters and the whole point of the story is about how Blackthorne is ultimately an incredibly minor player in the grand scheme of feudal Japan. Clavell already did everything they were patting themselves on the back for.
