His dad was kind of a cunt to not telling him a long time ago that he was going to reinstate the republic, but claiming birthright on the leadership of an empire is giga entitled. Whether or not Commodus was a shit emperor because of his dad or because he just inherently sucks could be up for debate, but he was clearly not emperor material.
In real life there were many emperors before them that didn't inherit the throne through their father. Commy never really deserved the throne by law or by merit
