My gay theory is that there is a huge nuclear energy reaction and magic mix going on there in Old Valyria, with extreme levels of radiation that even now and at a distance cause things like greyscale. When the Disaster happened that energy + all the dragon lords and dragons dying there somehow made an equivalent exchange (think how Dany hatched her dragon eggs) that gave birth to a huge nuclear lava wyrm.
