Since you mentioned the p-word, I firmly believe that despite the popular opinion contrary to mine, preferring popular pictures over arthouse & classic pictures is pretentious.
Pretentiousness, as I understand it, is asserting to something a higher value than the actual substance of it. Arthouse can more safely do what big budget pictures usually can't, which is respecting the intelligence of the audience. Arthouse has more intellectual substance, but it requires audience contemplation. Naturally this filters out most audiences who don't intimately care of the art form and are just there to be entertained.
Now wouldn't holding something of lower intellectual substance at a higher value than something of higher intellectual substance be pretentious?

Why won't you just accept it bro... do I have to bring back the post where you said "I have a new system to bake threads! I will post a picture of a Yugioh card and that will mean that a bake is incoming, and if an anon tries to post another card to counterbake he will get banned for pretending to be a part of 4chan staff". Is someone just about to mass leak Venice titles or what? Koberidze is technically a Locarno premiรจre I think, but he is in some secondary Venice lineup too if I am not mistaken. Or was it TIFF?

Watched 2001 and I stood up and pointed at the screen and clapping, mouth agape when the visual metaphor happened. What does the heckin monolith mean? It's so frickin esoteric and smart and woah my mind is being blown dude its like a psychedelic experience like when you do le drugs, which I do btw. It's so sick how every shot is meticulously choreographed, you can almost feel the homicidal rage every crew member must have felt towards that autistic freak. No I wasn't awake for most of it but it's on all the lists of greatest films which means I like it!

I went alone to the movie theater to see 2001 15 years ago. It was near midnight and I was in high school still. So this was a big deal to go out that late like that.
They straight up played the bluray of the film projected onto the theater screen lmao but to this day it is my personal favorite theater experience. Sometimes the experience of the film is also about actually going somewhere to see it. And the ambience of before and after the screening. I donโt know if the younger generation understands

Also, you fags complain that nobody talks about films here but everytime i do i get 0 to 1 replies, the previous thread another example, two posts about two films and the only reply was to only one of the posts and a guy just telling me to watch another film. You actually only want to talk about the same 50 films/filmmakers if even that high a number, always Bresson Tarkovsky Bergman Godard, everytime someone goes out of "le canon" that person gets no engagement. So fuck you crying fags that keep complaining nobody talks about films here.

No it wasn't. It was on life support for a few hours with barely anything happening, then it got some attention leading it to overtake the /film/ thread which had devolved into the kind of squabbling you're engaging in here, then it devolved into the aforementioned kind of squabbling when everyone left the /film/ thread and then it got nuked, leading everyone back to /film/. Being an attention whore who rationalizes it as being about how much you hate attention whoring is still attention whoring.

>Pretentiousness, as I understand it, is asserting to something a higher value than the actual substance of it.
You understand incorrectly. It's not the act of ascribing a higher value to something than its true substance, it's the quality of something which ascribes to ITSELF a higher value etc. Think 'pretending to the throne'.
People are described as 'pretentious' because they watch eg arthouse films because of the perception that they falsely believe doing so is some mark of distinction.
Someone who prefers cineplex summer-blockbuster slop might well be pretentious if they falsely believe that preference marks them as superior, but I don't know that that's a very common perception.

Makes sense. I'm only going off of one definition of the word. I guess you could say a pretentious picture is one that insists upon itself. Art is one-way communication anyways. How enjoyable a piece of art is to someone relies on their individual ability to receive the information.

fucking Armond man lmao
IT IS MAN that we need. A look caught with surprise can be sublime." That's Robert Bresson quoted in Babette Mangolte's The Models of Pickpocket (showing at Anthology Film Archives), a documentary exploring the mystery of Bresson's art by interviewing the performers of his 1959 film Pickpocket 43 years later. Mangolte investigates the processes that made Bresson's films distinctive, but her inquiry into the phenomenon of film acting is a pop-art coup. It dovetails with Bernie Mac's remarkable performance in Mr. 3000.
Comic-turned-actor Mac intuitively and instructively reveals a mutual sensitivity to the dilemma of a public figure fighting for his place in history. With Pickpocket, Bresson gave its principal actors Pierre Leymarie, Marika Green and Martin Lasalle a form of immortality. First called "interpreters," then "models," they all feel that their lives were changed by working with "Monsieur Bresson." Leymarie carries the memory into his work as a genetics researcher, Green became a professional actress and Lasalle pursued various career options as actor, painter, gardener, always haunted by Bresson's influence. Each performer admits how they "gave" themselves to Bresson. Years later they understood his dictum, "When the model is free of all intentionality, his expressiveness is adequate for the filmmaker." This is not just a high-art command; one gorges on the honest and authentic humor of Mac's characterization.

Mr. 3000 is such a robust comedy that when you realize it also has depth, it nearly becomes an embarrassment of riches. Mac plays Stan Ross, #21 of the Milwaukee Brewers, who gets his 3000th hit, qualifying him for the baseball Hall of Fame, then quits the team. He's not exhausted, just selfishโand that selfishness is a result of his career-long, goal-oriented struggle. To achieve eminence, Ross has pushed against all obstacles of competition that are routine in an athlete's life, that men know especially well, that black men experience as part of society's racist tradition. Ross doesn't give a damn what anybody else thinks about his decision to retire; he's fully aware that he has earned respect if not likability.
What makes Ross the finest characterization on screen this year (comparable to Bresson's realness) is that Mr. 3000 represents a hell of a balancing act. He's an existential American man going through psychological and political slapstick, which Bernie Mac makes absolutely credible. Unlike the neo-W.C. Fields irascibility Mac shows on his Fox tv series, Ross is wound too tight to warm up to anyone. "I'm a certified immortal! And there ain't nothin' y'all sons of bitches can do about it!" he declares. This boast goes to disgruntled fans and peeved sports writers who think Ross gets his comeuppance when he has to return to the team due to a counting error. Though short of his goal, Ross doesn't immediately change his habits, because Mr. 3000 isn't pabulum like Seabiscuit, where a sports hero turns sweet. This characterization digs down into the core of masculine pride that makes people simultaneously admire and resent outstanding athletes.

I don't even know if I have the energy to watch this. An eight hour Alien story? When the original film is less than two? How egotistical, for the showrunner to think that the story he has to tell could possibly necessitate THAT much time to deliver. Goodness, I miss the old broadcast television-type miniseries where it'd be two 90 minute episodes. The streaming era has just completely obliterated any sensible restrictions on storytelling. Constraint is a good thing in art. Time slots kept indulgence at bay. Now nobody has to "kill their darlings", the most basic writing advice of all. I tried to watch the latest Stranger Things for Winona but I couldn't get through it, the season finale was 2 hours and 30 minutes long. All this streaming crap calls to my mind a fat, waterlogged, bloated corpse floating in a river.

>The other thing that changed how people thought about location shooting was The Conformist. This was a milestone in the history of production design, in the fullest sense of the word. To my mind, you can speak of pre-Conformist and post-Conformist design. When we did American Gigolo, we worked with the production designer of The Conformist:a man named Ferdinando Scarfiotti. He had begun working with Luchino Visconti on a lot of theater work, and they did Death in Venice together. When they brought in Vittorio Storaro on The Conformist to do the cinematography, they had that troikaโin my opinion, one of the most incredible visual troikas in the history of movies.
>The Conformist was a synthesis of Godardโs self-consciousness and the pictorialism of Visconti and Antonioni. What Bertolucci with Scarfiotti and Storaro did was combine the visually rich Italian tradition with the French intellectual tradition. After The Conformist, the three went on to make Last Tango in Paris. And after Scarfiotti did American Gigolo, we did Cat People together. We became friends, and heโs someone whose visual style has transformed me.

>When Jean-Louis Trintignant goes to the mental hospital to visit his father, it looks nothing like a mental hospitalโitโs more like a visual idea of a mental hospital. And this film is full of visual ideas. Thereโs a scene with all these walnuts on a table. I once asked Ferdinando why the table is covered with walnuts, and he just responded: โI thought it looked good.โ Itโs a visual idea, one that you canโt explain with words.
>Iโll give an example from American Gigolo. The opening scene takes place in a house on the beach. We had two scenes there: the opening scene where Richard Gere talks to Nina Van Pallandt, and then a later scene where they go out and walk on the beach. Ferdinando couldnโt find a location he liked. Iโd say: โBut there must be 50 beach houses up in Malibu. Just choose one!โ Finally one day he came in and said heโd found something. The house heโd found hadnโt been lived in yet. So he told me to ignore the room, because he was planning on putting up walls everywhere.
>When you see Gere walk in the house, itโs a space created as if it were in a set. Everything in that sceneโwith the exception of the oceanโwas not there. Everything was built. The carpet and the walls and the paintings and the props. And that was the mentality that The Conformist brought to the movies, that a realistic location is in fact like a set.

>The impact of Scarfiotti in American Gigolo went much further than the films he did. Michael Mann loved the look of the film, and when he was doing a film called Thief, he tried to hire Ferdinando. Then when Mann went on to do Miami Vice, he took all those lessons that he had gotten from Ferdinando. That notion of Miami Vice comes right from American Gigoloโwhich comes straight from Scarfiotti.
>The freedom of Scarfiottiโs production design is still with us today. If you watch CSI or any number of these shows, you get very unrealistic setsโodd colors coming into rooms. Who would have seen a police department office like one of these rooms you see? That was the freedom that The Conformist brought to set design, location scouting, and beyond.

Scorsese initially wanted her to just go ahead and do it, but agreed that maybe it would be best upon her showing them to him at his request. Arquette was eternally grateful for this, and recalled the story at her salute to him when he received his AFI Lifetime Achievement Award.

1941, Germany is about to get in war with US and the movie follows a veteran pilot of WW1 who is now a high ranking general in charge of a technical department of Luftwaffe. There is a subplot about sabotage and why the new bombers are killing pilots, but mostly its about the main character who is completely disillusioned with Reich and is sick of war. Movie shows how higher class acted during the still early years of war, and in that regard it's a very cozy movie, with lush scenes of dinners, singing, dancing and various conversations.
Terrific acting by the leading role and some very pretty women in the movie as well. Recommended

I've read online that 18-year-old Sofia Coppola ghost-directed this segment, and that's partly why it sucks. It was basically a covert way for Francis to teach his daughter how to direct.

I've been there. I started rerating everything, but never finished, and now I feel I already need to do it again. So I'm just leaving the ratings as they are now and I'll just rerate a single film if I either rewatch it or really question my rating when I stumble upon it again

I probably only need to do a rerate once. I fell for a lot of babby's first arthouse early on, and there are also many where I was embarrassingly filtered. I'll probably go through the 'boxd later in the year. This is why I don't write reviews too.

ghost directed? isn't she in the credits? anyways, yeah, she wrote it
it sucks but she was also 18 years old and was also harassed non stop by the whole world for The Godfather 3 sucking which wasn't her fault at all
she wasn't gonna be in the film at all until Winona quit cause of healthy issues and she only learned she was gonna have to play Mary the very same day she had to shoot her first scene

That's a rather reductive way to put it.
On that note, I highly recommend this magazine interview he did in 2018. It's absolutely bizarre and very, very entertaining. His digression about the Beatles/Ringo is hysterical, and somehow not even the funniest part.
