Kind of boring
Same thing happened in Barbarian. I was hooked in initially then got so fucking bored I kept skipping forward and forward so it would end faster. He also took the nonlinear different POV gimmick of Barbarian but dialled it up to 11. Wasn't terrible but I thought I was going in for something really special and more interesting based on the acclaim it had.

So the crowds have been laughing at the principals dialogue when he first shows up cause they think he's the token funny asian. like most horror films, it requires a degree of suspension of disbelief. but yes, a month going by and zero progress made on the investigation is silly, also NO one called the cops when the prinicipal was running miles through town with THAT face? but then again these movies want you to focus on just the main characters, or else the plot would have been solved much sooner.

Fargo does that to established the fact that we're watching a sombre upsetting crime story because otherwise it would be a movie that opens with Steve and William being whacky in a diner and audience would think it was a caper comedy.

the narration at the start of this is a straight contradiction. no one telling a story about a solved kidnapping would open by acting like the victim's story was never told because that completely changes the KIND of story. also the kids set on the witch at the end solely because the writer decided the audience would want it. its just a series of dumb ideas from hollywood's latest pet overhyped horror writer/director.

The Empty Man has the originality, aesthetic dread, conspiratorial plunge, and actual character depth that Weapons loudly postured to have. Weapons is marketed as a dark epic modern mystery thriller when it has the clothes line simplicity of those spooky made for TV movies in the 70s and 80s, but shuffling its timeline to invite pretentious Pulp Fiction Magnolia "90s auteur" comparisons. The collective expectation of what it could and should be kinda ruins it.

I really didn't like it. The opening voice over giving exposition was cringe, the weird POV repetition thing was really tedious (especially the cop's one), there was tons of generic and random jumpscare moments that made little sense, it was really predictable and full of tropes so there were no surprises through most of it, the casual confirmation of the aunt being a witch about halfway through ruined any of the mystery or tension of what happened to the kids, the focus on the boring lives of boring characters wasted so much time, the dad's weird dream sequence was pointless, and then it all immediately turned on its head and became a comedy once the dad and the teacher got into the kid's house.

I've seen people praising this as some sort of creative masterpiece, but it's one step away from being a parody. It's like someone took Prisoners, Longlegs, Cobweb, and Pulp Fiction, put it all in a blender, and then poured the remains into a mold of the most paint-by-numbers Jordan Peele film.

Mad, right? There was definitely potential, but it felt like the first draft of a screenplay that you don't even show to anybody. And then it was badly directed as well.

Just a random example that I can't get out of my head, there's that scene where Josh Brolin confronts Beaknose Noodlehair at the garage, and there's a bit of a disagreement, then it's suddenly cut off with zombie Wong running up and tackling her. That scene alone would've been ten times better if they'd just fixed the camera over her shoulder, squarely on Brolin, and while they have their back and forth, Wong is visible in the far distance running towards them, so far that you wouldn't even notice him to start with because you're fixed on Brolin's underlying rage, desperation, and frustration as he confronts a woman he believes has taken his son. As Wong's getting closer, have a bright-coloured car drive passed in the background so the audience's attention is slightly pulled that way, and then they naturally notice him closing in rapidly.

Instead, we got constant camera cuts between the two characters, then the woman looking over his shoulder and remarking at Wong running at them, then a cut to him running across the car park at them, it was just so empty.

In the original screenplay; the movie ends on the vacant stare of Josh Brolin's son's face without narration. Apparently people complained in test screenings that the movie "couldn't just end like that" and so Zach Cregger added that extra narration about how some of the kids had started speaking again, etc. I do agree that the narration was bullshit in general though since at the beginning the little girl is telling the story from the perspective of two-years later and explicitly states that "they NEVER came back" (as in they never came home, or were never found) even though they only all disapeared for about a month.

There was major inconsistencies with this whole thing. The kids and Alex's parents don't get turned back to normal after they've been hypnotised, but Josh Brolin does. And when Alex snaps the twig and makes the kids hunt down the witch, the kids all run like they've been activated by salt (screaming and arms forward), instead of the way everyone did usually when they ran with their arms out.

It felt more like Zach didn't bother to think it through.

This movie is a lot like Barbarian, in that it has an amazing first act, where a really intriguing mystery is set up, but then the rest of the film is just a mess. The final act of Barbarian felt like an actual comedy.
It's silly at times, like the actual comedy shots of the children chasing after the witch while she's hobbling and screaming, like a real Millennial Marvel type humour where any real tension or drama has to be instantly undermined with a "uhh, so that just happened" type of joke.
I think the only reason the film is split into different chapters from the different main characters perspectives is to just drag out that first act and keep the mystery building up and, otherwise the film would have been like 40 minutes long.

>they NEVER came back
That would work in the context of the original ending. As in, they were all mentally gone, empty husks, or a "town shame" situation where they were all institutionalized or put into some sort of group home and news of their recovery never spread.

one thing i noticed is the people who like this movie are literally wordcels.
they enjoy the conversations between the characters more than the actual horror/comedy aspects.
for me the best and hardest hitting(pun intended) part of the movie was when the cop pricks his finger on a needle and immediately donkey punches the junkie in the head. only part of the movie that felt visceral and like it came from a real place.
rest of it was trash.

this is how modern movies are meant to be watched.
no one is going to the theater and patiently sitting through the movie enraptured. literally everyone is on their phone or shoving corn syrup in their face even in the theater nowadays and if you crawled out of your house to goto the kinoplex you'd know this.

they didn't come back tho, it's shown that the parents don't recover from possession and the kids have been under possession for almost as long.
only josh brolin comes back and that's coz he's only weaponised for a couple of minutes and even then you can see he's not fully lucid.

The funniest thing about this movie is that you absolutely 100% know why Jordan Peele wanted the script.
He would've made it
>white witch
>all the weaponized students would've been black kids
You just know that's how he would've interpreted the script.

This movie was about one thing, trying to understand Trevor's death.

Trevor fell off a balcony while he was drinking. The main character is an alcoholic. Does it have anything to do with the movie? no. At the end of the day all the tragedy (kids running to a random direction to their demise) is from some crazy witch.

It's simply him saying "shit happens, you can blame whatever you want, but shit happens". It's not that deep, it doesn't resonate with me, but that's the point

I was the only one that laughed out loud at that scene in the theater, but it's because right before that the cop is asking the typical "you don't have anything that's gonna poke me" spiel to the druggie.
And I was asking myself "why do cops always do that phony poke bs? It's obviously some sort of setup to get you to admit what you have in your pockets. What's this moronic poke-phobia that cops pretend to have?"
And then right then he got pricked by a fucking dirty ass syringe and proved me wrong and I reflexively cracked up out loud.

I had the same reaction. The movie doesnt justify the gimmick at all. Based on the reviews and how the structure was playing out I thought it was building a complex story that was connecting these specific characters into a thematic whole that was going to wow me at the end. Instead it just ends, and it turns out the whole structure gimmick and all the character work was just to make the movie less boring. It succeeded in that I guess, but diminished the whole movie for it. I had no choice but to leave the theater disappointed.
I'm sure theres some deep social commentary about weaponizing grief or children or some shit, and some faggot is going to write a video essay about why its genius, but it wont change the fact that its actually just a script that doesnt deliver.
It reminded me very much of Jordan Peele's Nope, which also had a "weird" structure involving a monkey on an old TV show mixed with the main plot, and it turns out to just be a gimmick framework that loosely applies to the main plot.
Anyway, Weapons is a 7/10

It's very possible it was supposed to be a dark comedy, but he was forced to make it more of a horror/thriller to satisfy some bigwigs, but it would also mean he had to re-write the extremely boring scenes where two characters just talk for a while to remove the humour that could've easily been in it. Like that scene with the cop and the woman in the bar, it was just mind-numbing to sit through but wouldn't have taken much to add some dark comedy moments, playing on the whole alcoholic thing.

It would also explain all those really redundant jumpscare scenes that felt shoehorned in, like the witch appearing in Brolin's dream, or appearing on the ceiling of Ozarkette's bedroom. Like they just added them to hit the jumpscare quota.

On the other hand, it could really have just been Zach trying to make a horror but his comedy background creeping in to the point where he turned the ending into a joke. If I didn't know it was the WKUK Zach, I would've thought the Smiling Friend's Zach was involved, he talks about lots of people/kids surrounding a victim and tearing them apart with quick grabs quite often, I think at one point it was about a monkey torn apart at a kid's birthday party as a dinner.

Barbarian was far better and that film wasn't even that good.
>>213623627
Barbarian was actually disturbing and a lot darker, the monster wasn't the giant woman who could physically overpower anyone, it's that she was an incest baby from a baby created by raping the women he captured and killed. Finding the old man in there and seeing all the tapes then the hobo dropping that he got so bored of killing, he started making babies with the babies was genuinely unnerving. Also the old man killing himself and not getting what he deserved and the mother getting shot in the head, it's actually far more horrific and dark than what we got in weapons. The dream sequence with the giant weapon was the peak of the film and then it just went to shit, I was waiting to leave.

its fucking hilarious that all these bidding wars happen on the basis of a script that then gets changed because of test screenings.

but I bet the original version of the script wasn't actually much better. decisions in Hollywood are based on groupthink and chasing fads.
