good vidya storytelling doesn't work as a traditional narrative because it embraces the fact that the player is the protagonist.
Deus Ex - intentionally OTT conspiracy stew that Denton quips his way through.
BG2 - basic fantasy quest with evil wizard, it doesn't even ultimately matter if you yourself are good or bad.
Portal - you don't even have any dialogue or characterization
