Interesting. Where I live, I don't think it emerged as a "bad girl" thing when it became available/widespread, I think it was pretty neutral.
Belly button piercings are hot imo and I approve of them very much (I know this is a divisive topic among people who are into bellies and belly buttons).
Perhaps unexpectedly, I wish that more girls were more conscious/thoughtful about ear piercings. I mean, regular/normal piercings for earrings. They are SO overwhelmingly widespread in the Western-ish cultures that it's very hard to find a girl who doesn't have her ears pierced in any way. When girls have their belly button pierced or their nose pierced or a tattoo done, there is some decision making behind it, "I want a belly button piercing", "I want a tattoo". Ear piercings seem to be done without thinking and at an extremely young age, often initiated by the mother btw. I find it a little strange that this specific type of piercing is so ingrained in the culture.
