In the Western world we need a compendium of justifications. I think that's part of the reason medieval fantasy is still so prevalent, because you can get away with having 80% of the cast being European in an area that should be 99.99% European.

This is simply not a universal truth at all. Even assuming absolutely the best intentions and everyone being a good faith actor in the matter. An author isn't a universal authority on their characters once their work is finished and available for others to see, intake, interpret, judge. Just because you created something - characters, a fictional world, or any other fictional entity - doesn't mean that you're automatically a word of god on them. The very act of creating a character or a world is an act of thinking about all the various possibilities that are available ("hmm, should my story be about a guy who would act this way or that way in this situation?"), picking one of those possibilities and deciding to write about it. The characters / world / "that universe" in general exists essentially in the aether and always has; some of them get thought of by authors and come to life in one manner or another (book, anime, whatever), some others are yet to be discovered and written about, but the author doesn't "control" their characters any more than a historian/scholar controls the real-life events that he writes about.

I think the character is supposed to be Egyptian or something in the anime and the artist drew someone with pale skin, which was a dumb choice and something you people seemed perfectly okay with. Now they’re casting someone that actually fits the character and you’re arguing in bad faith about her not looking like the anime character that was already ill cast. I don't think it's wrong for darker-skinned actors to play lighter-skinned characters as long as they give a good performance, are good-looking, and they dress appropriately. The problem is that half the time, Hollywood keeps casting darker-skinned actors to play lighter-skinned characters AND THEN

I know that Robin had a tan in early One Piece and that this was exclusive to the anime, but I really think Robin's hotter with darker skin. It would have made much more sense to cast a Coptic Egyptian woman who is more likely to have been descended from the same people as the ancient Nefertiri. Also, not difficult to use an Atlas or a globe and see that Egypt in the Mediterranean is far, far away from the South Asian subcontinent where India is located. South Asians are largely Hindu or Muslim and they do not practice the Coptic Christian religion that actual descendants of real ancient Egyptians practice even today.
