Back when there were relatively few people online AND they also typed from full-size keyboards of PCs and laptops, people ACTUALLY talked online in a meaningful way. Even the people who, at first glance, you might dismiss as being some dumb blonde airhead chick or something. I don't necessarily mean that every single person was "worth talking to", but people were putting actual effort into online conversations.

This has very largely died out with the advent of smartphones.

I was recently standing in a public place outdoors (regular urban street with an open area) while waiting for someone. I was a little early and had a bit of time. I was listening to music, and I have wired earbuds that are undeniably noticeable up close, black earbuds and black wires against my skin and my light-colored shirt.

This guy comes up to me and asks me for directions. I was 32, he was maybe like 27 or something. A bit street-thuggish looking, but moderately. Not immediately dangerous, just "tuff guy" vibes.

But I have music in my ears, man!

I look at him, he repeats his question and gestures for me to take my earbuds out so that I can hear him. But I actually can hear him, I heard his question, my music isn't all that loud. I know that he's asking for directions and not trying to tell me something specific and personal. Meanwhile there are plenty of other people around us, standing and walking and sitting on benches etc. But he decided to pick fucking ME with my visible earbuds.

I say to him, "WHY DID YOU PICK ME? THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE AROUND WHOSE EARS ARE FREE, WHY ME?"

I didn't mean to shout, but over the music in my ears, I suppose I probably was louder than intended. A couple of people near us glanced at me.

The guy looked fucking pissed. Like, actually pissed. I thought he might try to punch me or something. But he shook his head in disapproval and walked off.
