The story makes it very obvious that he's just looking for an excuse to kill, he's a narcissistic sociopath who is very intelligent so much so that his ego doesn't allow him to see reason.Till the end he was an immature manchild who didn't understand his fault, and died thinking he was wronged. To be fair L figured out Light is holding the whole world hostage just by studying his mentality for only targetting criminals. Using a death row criminal just feel appropriate to see if Kira really has ESP power which may let him see if a person is innocent or not. I can make arguments but show also makes it obvious that L and Light are comically similar even if they don't present themselves that way.

L still does morally dubious things all the time. That whole fake L thing early on is psychotic and the morals of it are autistic technicalities (it was fine to use this guy as a human sacrifice because the state was gonna kill him anyway so we must assume he deserved it regardless). At the point that he gets Light's dad to fake like he's about to murder-suicide, the series is just really over the top about it. L isn't a good person lmao
