>>213640036 (OP)One of the most entertaining movies ive ever seen in the cinema. Haven't seen a crowd laugh and scream in the cinemas more than with this film. It's a modern classic already and no amount of anti-shilling will make people think its bad.
The assault rifle sounded creepier in the script

>>213640036 (OP)>Read pic relI really want to know what happened, those kids must have had a good/crazy reason... and the script has to be tight in order to explain it.
>Something supernatural made them do itnvm then
>>213640558what should have happened in your opinion?
>>213640558Yeah, like Barbarian, the movie becomes way less interesting once they reveal what's happening too soon and then you're just like 'ok then that's it?'
>>213640036 (OP)Maybe it's because I watch way too many cop shows, but the fact that the kid was super suspicious and no one bothered to check on him after the initial check rubbed me the wrong way. And it bugged me more when they brought it up in the story and they were like "it's probably nothing" they and the explanation for why the kids went missing fell flat for me. Everything else was great.
>>213640068I can't keep rewriting my experience in every weapons thread but yes, this was my exact same experience too in the theater
>>213640036 (OP)It was ok. The structure makes is seem more complicated than it really is. In reality, you could remove half of the movie and lose nothing relevant for the plot. While the character building is interesting, it doesn't do enough to get the viewer emotionally attached to those characters. The cop and the junkie where interesting characters, but they do literally nothing to move the plot forward and when they die, you feel nothing.
>>213640683>Someone says he can make three elephants fit in a tiny box>Turns out he can't do it>People get disappointed>"Well how would YOU have done it huh?"That's how you sound.
It's just a bummer to read an interesting premise that turns out to be retarded. But to be fair the director never promised a non-supernatural answer, so I'm not mad, the blame is on me and I'm just disappointed.

I'm autistic enough to tell Gladys is over 200 years old because she used "consumption" an archaic term for tuberculosis
>>213641192>Why was Matthew shown to be bullying Alex? This is a red herring, it makes you think Alex may have done the whole thing as revenge.
The cop getting stuck with a needle the first time is also a red herring, made me think the junkie was somehow behind it and injected the kids with some shit that made them act weird.
What's funny is that those red herrings were inconsequential and didn't throw off any character who was investigating the missing children, they were aimed at the audience.

I dunno, maybe something about alienation and neuroticism versus action orientation (reflected in the situation each boy's parents find themselves in; Alex's are catatonic and Matthew's are, "I gotta find my son!" and, "I'm going to work.").
>>213640036 (OP)I think they could have leaned more into the cops and parents being apathetic/useless as a metaphor for school shootings as that was clearly the intent but they didn't really commit. >this was the only black person with a speaking role

>>213650976This post is retarded. The names missing means nothing and would be a dead end. The name tags were burned and used to make the zombie kids. The only thing you can infer from that is that maybe it was a part of the kid's plan or maybe it's just a coincidence. The ring footage was looked at by the cops already. Archer says that when he goes to the other parent's house and ask to see their footage. It just leads him to Alex's house which was already searched by the feds and cops. Marcus isn't admonishing Justine because she cares too much it's because she wants to talk to Alex to make herself feel better. She follows Alex's bus and watches his house for hours. When she finally works up the nerve to talk to him she only mentions herself. There was no way to logically solve this case if you don't know magic exist. For the ordinary person the case went like this
>17 kids from one class leave their house at 2:17AM and disappear except one child and the teacher>the child and teacher's houses are searched and nothing is found>weeks pass and the principal of the school attacks the teacher at a gas station after killing his husband>he's hit by a car>the next day the 17 kids show up again rampaging through a neighborhood and tearing the aunt of the only not missing kid apart>the rampage started in the house of the one kid that didn't go missing where a junkie and dead cop are found>everyone who survived can't speakThe only person who can give the whole rundown is Alex. I'm not even sure if he fully understood everything outside of the magic. Even if they pin it on Gladys "it was magic" doesn't exactly fly in court.
>>213652252>In the script Garner tries to find information on the "ministry of silly walks" Iโve read the script retard
>>213652577Then why ask a retarded question that was answered by the script?

I don't even need to see this to know that it's shit. Normies have absolute dogshit taste when it comes to horror films.
>>213652607Brolin and Garner were obsessed with the case so that could link to her magic. They only saw her in dreams related to the disappearance. The junkie only saw her after he left the house. She could put some kind of curse or something on those getting too close
>>213652406yes that's Marcus' perspective of Justine though also says her prior offense was giving a kid a ride home because she cares too much and we later see her in flashback trying to coax Alex to open up in the classroom.
I'll grant you the nametags but the logistics are not really important to the larger point regarding the thematic subtext about how the idea of normativity and community is enacted when fractured and displaced. Facade of domestic life (addictions, infidelity, insecurity). Parent/kid dynamic of protection, paranoia and projection (brolin/son bully), Alex as caretaker for alcoholic parent allegory (Cregger's interview).
>>213652789I can see that communal aspect, especially when compounded with the weaponization motif and generational parasitizing. doesn't need to have an explicit message but it's nice to chew on and mull over afterwards while being fun in the moment
I don't understand the witch's motivation. She got the children, ok, now what? She didn't use them at all since she's not healing. What is she doing with them?
Before the end she plans to run away with the child somewhere else to do it again I guess? But what is she going to do with the enchanted people? Just leave them there? If you do abandon them, that includes the parents and if you leave them behind you the kid will rebel which fine, not a big deal, but then why are you telling him to pack away? Just kill him/vodoo him and leave him too
Funny movie but pretty fucking dumb
>>213652789there was that whole monologue about Brolin not being able to say I love you to his son too, and he still doesn't say it when he rescues him, just "I found you". That and the final shot on Matthews face being carried - Brolin's paternalism as an enactment of faux communal order in place of love, think that's a good cipher within the semiotic network of other themes
>>213652789>also says her prior offense was giving a kid a ride homeAlso hugging a kid. While they are innocent and a sign of a good teacher now you can't do that. Especially when it comes to elementary school students. Giving them a ride has you alone with the child in your car and can be considered kidnapping. The other can be assault. I'd argue that doesn't mean Marcus doesn't care about the kids I'd say he's the more of a sterile by the books way of child rearing while Justine is actually personable.
> the thematic subtext about how the idea of normativity and community is enacted when fractured and displaced. Facade of domestic life (addictions, infidelity, insecurity). Parent/kid dynamic of protection, paranoia and projection (brolin/son bully), Alex as caretaker for alcoholic parent allegory (Cregger's interview). Now that I can see. The therapy sessions offered by the school that are impersonal but there to check a box. How we're first introduced to Paul as a soft spoken voice of reason when he's actually a cheating hot head. Alex being shown as a shy creepy kid when he's actually the bravest character.

Moving 17 missing kids while there are surveillance cameras everywhere isn't easy and she has to prep to do it. Justine is the prime suspect who all the heat is on (and the theme of the movie is a witch hunt, after all), so if she just went missing, then they'd start looking elsewhere for answers and start likely probing Alex and the house again. That's why she used the principal, who she needed to kill anyways since he was going to report to the police, to do a murder-suicide. I also think they had writing constraints, since they have to demonstrate how the weaponizing works, but they can't use the kids since they're in hiding, nor could the kids be shown getting killed. Also Benedict Wong just looked freaky as fuck.
they never revealed who wrote bitch on the whores car
>>213654268Witch and brolin did
>>213654268sir, your media literacy?
Am I misremembering hard or wasn't there an X-Files or Millennium episode with this plot? All the kids in one class got up and left their house in the middle of the night and disappeared and the teacher got the blame because all they had in common was them being in her class.
People keep saying brolin was a bully but the paint was pretty random
>>213654299ARRRGHGHHG WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!?!?!
>>213653077It did seem like she was healing, she was much more energetic and her hair had grown back, but they couldn't heal her too much or she wouldn't look scary anymore. She was also using Alex to run all her errands, especially feeding the zombie kids which looked tedious as fuck.
>>213653472Not ALL witches you bigot
There was absolutely no reason to make the principal gay.
Other than that, good movie.
>>213641060It reminded me of Yoneda in Yakuza 0
>>213644066Nepos losing is a good win
>>213654268why do you think they make a scene about Brolin ordering the wrong paint for that construction job?
>>213654317he is a bully, or at least aggressive, and his son is a bully
>>213642388I want her so fucking bad. Those little faces she makes at the cop with her lips when he says heโs single. She did a lot of that in Ozark and fuuuuuuuuck.
>>213654213>cameras everywhere>meanwhile none of them were able to record the 17 kids, cop, principle, junkie, dad and teacher walking into alex's house over the course of a month
>>213648142If I make a movie set in caveman times and have one of them hallucinate an iPhone because itโs about our deep desires as social creatures or whatever thatโs still going to look kind of silly.
I know this movie is set in modern times but nothing about it suggest even bringing up AR-15s.
Reminds me of when blackklanssman had conversation about โmuh racist presidentโ when it came out in Trumpโs first term or how it ended with fucking Charlottesville footage lmao.
At least this was a way better movie, but that just makes the AR-15 hallucination stick out like a sore thumb even more.
>>213644066Nic Cage as Mrs. Doubtfire putting magic balls in dolls was such a letdown
The witch getting ripped apart by children at the end was straight out of Smiling Friends lmao.
Great movie.
>>213654645was it a bit jarring? sure. but its a dream, dreams are jarring, they slam different images/sounds/things together. if there is ONE valid medium to have these jarring combos in, its dreams.
>>213654663yeah hard to imagine what it'd be like with someone other than cage. his meme prowess can be noxious but sometimes results in kino, thought The Surfer recently was great
>>213652789>>213653143>>213653148Between this and Barbarian, the idea of the family structure hiding underlying evils, and the idea of the house being an accursed place where those evils manifest, are interesting. Very insular in the former, which makes sense given it's about more or less incest (and exploitation of the property system), but I couldn't help noticing the emphasis on all the house settings. Justine and the Principal being attacked in their own homes. Paul being confronted by his fiance at home, Brolin depressed in his son's room as well as being a project manager, even the junkie living in his shitty tent, all to parallel with Alex's house being the base. It goes well with the idea of a witch infiltrating your village.
>>213651282Sounds like just the rituals, otherwise Alex would not gave been able to beat her in the end (unless he also had powers).
>>213652027Subliminal mind propaganda from the Mac vs. PC ads
>>213654710Maybe, but it seems like an โI can see what theyโre going for and it isnโt working for meโ kind of scene.
>>213654645How do you see an AR-15 in a movie called Weapons about kids and not get that its hinting about? He was trying to be blunt as possible, and it was also to symbolize Brolin being weaponized later. The witch is a metaphor for how people are manipulated and radicalized to the point of violence, and the victims are left as traumatized husks.
>>213655148>>213654967I do agree it was pretty heavy-handed though, there was probably a more seamless way to get the same idea across. But maybe he just thought it'd be funny to put a giant fucking gun in the sky.
>>213655148I mean I get it but I didnโt like that particular visual in the context of the story. The visual itself is cool though.
>>213655191Reminded me of a CoD zombies mystery box
Why does Cregger make his male characters chuds
>>213640068based, most /tv/iggers watch a shitty camrip though and will never experience it
>>213654566There aren't cameras on that street or they'd know where the kids are already, but that leaves her kind of stuck to keeping the kids in that area. She also can't risk a neighbor or passerby happening to see them, the whole town knows about the case. I wish they showed where she hid them though when the detectives came.
>>213655230Yeah some people in the crowd sounded confused when the gun appeared. I would've had the son pull the gun out on his dad or something instead. But I guess it wouldn't be as symbolic that way.
>>213654725yeah I like how he just uses themes and motifs as texture without dragging down the vehicle for spectacle and humor. No point trying remake/outdo Blue Velvet but as a genre picture though not all empty calories either. Will be keen to see how that evolves over his career in different forms but it's refreshing for horror and he knows that, see his comments here.
>>213648406
>>213655315Iโm guessing she hid them out in the woods somewhere.
>>213648903>over-consumptionI don't think so but the scapegoat thing is true, it's a literal witch trial, and the fact there's some police corruption thrown in goes to show, most bad situations just need a fall guy to tide it over.
>>213655643over-consumption is represented in multiple characters, justine, paul and james have drug addictions. the witch has to consume people's life force to survive and will always need more, the principal loves him some hotdogs and movies.
>gay couple shopping for sugary breakfast cereals
>chooses the "Fruity" Pebbles
It's 2025, Zach!
