Surely they had hamburger stands all over the country in 1954 and being that Ray spent a good amount of time on the road, he would have encountered many before this?
I get he’s enamored with their efficiency, cleanliness and consistency, but the idea of ordering a burger at a window then taking it somewhere to sit down and eat shouldn’t have elicited a reaction from him like he was just beamed aboard a UFO.

It literally wasn't common, you have to remember the car craze of the time. People wanted to bring their stupid fucking cars everywhere. The biggest restaurants were drive ins, they were making hand over fist. Nobody thought to streamline the process like the brothers did. Probably because nobody wanted to experiment with what was already working.

I remember my first time going to a McDonalds in France and you had to put in your order on a touch screen. Hell, I remember the first time we had a Quick and a McDonalds here (Within 500m of each other) and everyone went there and complained about it after that it tasted like shit. McDonalds won the war. The establishment's been there for over 25 years now. Recently a Burger King installed itself here. Prices are insane, lel. fucking 15 euros to get some fastfood for one person. McDonalds have grown uppity, it'll bite them in the ass eventually. The only thing I lament, is we still don't have 'Subway' here, must be cool to be able to choose your own vegetables and toppings for a sandwich.
