They fired Frank Darabont in season 1. Same guy who did The Mist and co-wrote The Blob remake. The Zombie makeup drops the off as well. Season 2 has a lot of high points but I suppose it's because of things left over from his writing after that it gets worse with a few high points here and there. I think this is the ultimate issue with all zombie stories. If there is no way to ultimately cure or kill off all the zombies, you are basically left with a world of utterly doomed people. The zombies in TWD are particularly depressing, because literally everyone is already infected and you come back from the dead whether you are bitten or not. So what hope is there for humanity? A future society where we are forever doomed into having to be fearful of corpses and the looming threat of outbreak that will literally never go away. Really a zombie show needs an overarching goal to build towards. Whether it is looking for the cure or traveling cross country to find someone. Something. TWD revels in meaninglessness. I went back and watched this whole thing after dropping it when season 3 was airing a decade ago, and it is now unironically one of my favorite shows ever, the thing is it’s just incredibly slow and has subpar writing and acting a lot of the time
It’s actually a really dark, grim show that has this naive optimistic tone to it, but what really makes it good is it has arguably the most likeable cast in tv history, Rick being one of the best hero characters ever. Then you have Daryl, Carol, every black person cast is based, Michonne, Tyreese. Even the fag character is the best fag character I’ve seen. Only character I really didn’t like was that faggot Eugene
It’s really become kinda underrated now as a show. First 5 seasons is probably the best survival show ever made, even more-so than LOST. Then season 6 is when the major drawn-out issues happen, which were already a problem since season 2. Negan saves it but then it immediately tanks again. The characters really do carry it

I watched this from the moment it aired on TV and then gave up around season 9 or 10. At its height, it was absolute kino and there were so many memorable moments. It took a complete nosedive in quality the moment they introduced Negan. Ironic considered the fact that he was what most people were excited for and he ended up killing the show in the end.

They didn't. Most of the people in the prison at that point used to live in Woodbury and abandoned the Governor. Also Merle correct identified the problem with the prison a season earlier. They could just get starved out even without the fences coming down.

Governor finding a working korean war tank and someone who can run it and enough gas to get it there is one of the dumbest asspulls in the series anyway. It's not even necessary. In the comic they use an IFV but even then they wouldn't need to since they could just keep the prison surrounded by the herd or let them knock down the rest of the fence since they could just snipe anyone on wall duty.

I watched the first few episodes when it aired originally, got busy and didn't watch any TV for years, then picked it up again a few years ago since it ended.

I stopped my binge shortly after Negan was introduced. They were setting up for some time before he came along the lines of "no one is irredeemable". So this caricature of a villain comes along and does every dispicable thing imaginable, after which I looked for some spoilers, and go figure, he redeems himself and becomes part of the group. Stupid.

One of my least favorite episodes was the black guy's flashback to the balding buddhist criminal psychiatrist. When his character said "I've only met one truly evil person", and that person just happened to be the one guy that victimized him, I found it insulting. Sure, all the violent degenerates that victimized other people were just misunderstood good people, but not that guy that murdered your family. Give me a fucking break.

But that's the outlook of the writers and those that have that ideology.

After Frank Darabont was fired it became noticeable that the showrunners had no idea where to go with the show outside the comic books plotline. Characters were gradually degraded into black & white caricatures of themselves and there was no character study involved anymore like in seasons 1 & 2. It was just the good guys vs. the comically evil people with shallow redemption arcs everywhere, like you stated.

It's funny that in the end, it was mostly women who followed the series because the guys were hot and they liked the superficial drama. Most of the actual fans dropped it shortly after Negan was introduced.
