The outcome was obvious from the start though. A manlet Superman was always going to end in failure because it´s conceptually a terrible idea. Not two ways around that.

Superman is meant to be the man of tomorrow, the light that leads the way into the future for regular people, aliens and heroes alike. For that he needs to be more than a man, he needs to be someone the others can follow, trust and believe in.

The flaws, the doubts, the fears... those humane traits are all meant to be private. Futhermore changing Jor El´s character only serves to confirm Luthor right. Regardless of Supes personal choice on the matter that still casts a shadow that breaks that pact. If you can´t unconditionally trust Superman you just can´t trust Superman. Specially if he constantly fucks up and all he has to offer are good intentions. That´s just not good enough.

People don't understand that Snyder didn't like the typical monthly comics, he went for writers like Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Frank Miller, darker stories that focused on darker unique characters or darkening established characters. It's more likely he read Marvelman as inspiration for Man of Steel, mostly because he wanted to capture the mythic grandeur of someone of absolute power while also showing its darkest side.
